Left Of The Dial
![Aki presents "Not That Friend", a show that hopes to push people out of their comfort zones with respect, consent, a lot of love and care. This show is mostly for [QTI]POC listeners as we delve into various ideas such as decoloniality, selfhood and collective love. White folx, think of this as an entry point for you - listen and learn! This show follows an informal open-ended format based on the needs of invited guests and themes discussed. You can definitely look forward to de-stressing with some good tunes somedays. ---------------------------------------Aki is that non-binary brown baby from out there who decided to come to Glasgow for studies. Through this show, you will hear their views and opinions about how their presence/body/identities are accepted and/or rejected. DISCLAIMER: This show might offer many opposing opinions. At the same time, Aki trusts that it is possible to have changing opinions. Opinions are not fixed. Please be open-minded and do not hate. ![Special Treatment is special.
The show had its Subcity debut in 1996 in the comedy slot, going onto occupy slots in drive time and breakfast until its final season in Winter 2008. Its 3-year tenure straddled all times of the day, all kinds of music and all kinds of topics – imagine ‘The One Show’ for the radio, except entertaining and informative and nothing to look at except your own toes. Or maybe a cat sitting on a towel. We had some heady times: like the time when Dr Baker deejayed from behind John Peel’s knees ~ it was all par for the course. Special Treatment was special.
Presented by Benjamin Baker [a.k.a Innes Smith, who has since gone on to make radio comedy for BBC Scotland and (the short lived) Channel 4 Radio], and Produced by Jeff Santana [a.k.a the legendary mash-up legend DJ Frenchbloke a.k.a Stuart McLean], Special Treatment was the toast of the town back in John Major’s Britain. Things really did need spicing up back then, and the show’s knowledgeable whimsy punctuated by easy listening, exotica and experimental curiosities were a fresh adrenaline boost straight to the heart via a 6 inch steel needle.
It’s what we need now. Britain needs Special Treatment once more.
We will bring you facts beyond the well-trod paths of Wikipedia. Music never to have been jammed screaming into an mp3 file. And anything else that we think is a bit special.
So pour yourself a nice cup of tea.
Then top it up with gin.
Then think that was a bad idea.
But drink it anyway.
Welcome to Special Treatment.
It's special. Special Treatment](/media/images/specialtreatment.2e16d0ba.fill-300x300.format-jpeg.jpg)

Backchannel Broadcast
![Perhaps the first ever radio programme based around fundamental principles of uncertainty. A show that isn't afraid to ask the big questions and then never, ever answer them! A show that's willing to go beyond, beyond the beyond and a little bit further than that. There will be deep jazz, electronic spirituals and dubs from the far side of saturn.
The Spirits Rejoice Manifesto from episode 1:
"The initial idea was for a show based around spiritual jazz, but the more that I thought about it, the more the show's remit expanded.
My current idea is a show based around spiritual music in the broadest possible sense, because to me, almost every kind of music an innate spiritual quality. I wholeheartedly acknowledge that this definition is a total cop out. But if I explain my thoughts on spirituality, it might become a bit more clear.
When I talk about spirituality, I'm not talking about any kind of organised religion. What I'm talking about instead is a kind of humble open-mindedness towards abstract ideas like the human soul, or spirits, or just any kind of higher function of the universe which we currently have no understanding of. That's different from blind faith, I think of it simply as having a relationship with the unknown.
I'm sure that every person [reading] this has had some kind of emotional experience which felt so palpable in the moment, and then defied explanation when reflected upon later. I believe that the closest we can come to describing or evoking these unknowable experiences is through art and music. Music especially can talk to you, and it can move you in mysterious ways: emotionally, physically or even occasionally geographically. It can effect you in ways that are simultaniously universal and highly personal.
So these are the kinds of ideas and the kinds of music I would like to present to you on the show. Music to cultivate a relationship with the unknown. In his book about the Square, the Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari makes reference to a Japanese proverb that describes infinity as 'a square... without corners'. So if I had to come up with a pithy description of what this show is supposed to be, I think I might say that it is a soundtrack for a square without corners." ![[There is a also a bit of all of you] is a time-space where the light focusses on reflections around the social resonance of mixing sounds and voices. The sonic ecology behind human interaction. The weird, the personal, the global.
Sound - Voice - Language. This is what links us. Take us appart.
In movies, videos, poems, songs or talks the intermingling, complementarity or oppositions of voices and sounds can be fascinating. A radio show is the ideal playground to try things, focus on some emotions, explore the limits and reflect on several aspects of the interactions that existes between the multiplicity of human voice and other variety of sounds.
