Music, Please! - Brimful of Asha
This week’s show is a personal musical walk into the past, inspired by, and in some small part an in-tribute to, the extraordinary cinema singing Icon Asha Bhosle, who sadly passed away on the 12th April. Bhosle’s wonderful voice and dazzlingly varied career have been an important part of my joyful musical listening life for almost 30 years. I take just a little moment to personally remember her talent, enduring spirit, and the joyful invention and energy of Bollywood cinema, in today’s Music, Please!
Throughout my DJing 'career' from the mid-90’s to the present day, there are many Bollywood tracks that I’ve mixed into my sets. I’ve curated and recorded a number of Bollywood mixes for Mixcloud, and for blogs, played at Bollywood club nights at The Art School, and dedicated my Music, Please! Subcity show to Bollywood themes on many of occasions. Considering all this, I very much feel I owe a personal note of gratitude.
Leicester indie band Cornershop’s 1998 no.1 UK hit ‘Brimful of Asha’ is THE most compelling tribute to Asha (they referred to her as “sandi rani" - Punjabi for "our queen”) placing her name right in the centre of mainstream musical discourse to celebrate not only her incredible talent and legacy, but that listening to music conjures hope and inspires escapism, a unique power that elevates life and the human spirit.
