As well as one of the great powers of its time, the Soviet Union was also one of the great leaders of classical music in the 20th century. With their incredible musical education system and extensive provisions for the arts, musical life in the Soviet Union was incredibly well endowed. Soviet music is especially interesting for arguably in no other period was music so intensely political. In their autocratic system, there were heated debates over what was and wasn’t acceptable and composers got in repeated trouble with the authorities because of their audacious works - with many finding their works banned and under intense scrutiny by the authorities.
