We're excited to welcome Ela Orleans and Soft Riot for this instalment of Subcity Sessions.
Born in Poland, Ela Orleans moved to Glasgow, Scotland in 1997 and joined collage pop group Hassle Hound. In 2004, Orleans moved to New York, where she collaborated with various noise artists. She began releasing her solo material in 2008. Orleans’ first release, 2009’s Lost LP on French label La Station Radar, received acclaim from several indie music publications and independent record stores around the world. Since then Orleans has been consistently praised for her consecutive releases. In October 2013, her double album Tumult In Clouds received The Dead Albatross Music Prize voted for by the finest record shops, radio presenters, listeners, writers and record collectors from across UK and Ireland. Her tracks have been played frequently on major and independent radio stations in UK, Europe, America and Japan. Orleans moved back to Glasgow by the end of 2011. She since toured UK and Europe, worked on several albums, soundtracks for independent films, and completed a remix of new age pioneer Laraaji for Warp.
Soft Riot is JJD, a former Vancouverite now residing in the Glasgow UK who has clocked in around twenty years of musical output in various bands and projects, including half a dozen art-damaged punk and hardcore bands as well as first-wave post-punk revivalists Radio Berlin. Moving from Vancouver to London UK in the late 2000s, Soft Riot came into full being, having released a couple of acclaimed albums and EPs and staging numerous tours around Europe.
Using an arsenal of synthesizers and effects, Soft Riot’s sound is an amalgamation of JJD’s personal experience with music, containing elements of synthesiser-based film soundtracks, romantic italo-style flourishes, throbbing arpeggiations and angular, psychedelic synth-pop all tied together with an underlying tension. It is a science-fiction heavy soundscape that narrates the listener through today’s fractured, excessive landscape with hints of black humour.17:00 - 19:30
