Journeys

Hey folks,
Journeys seems to be slowly progressing it's way through the decades at the moment, for some reason. In recent weeks we've had the Rock 'n' Roll of the 1950s, then the Psychedelic weirdness of the 1960s and now, this week, we will be enjoying some 1970s funk!
Expect to hear from the likes of Kool And The Gang, The Ohio Players, Slave, Parliament, Vicki Anderson, Lynn Collins, Amnesty and more.
This week's Weird But Wonderful contenders are a couple of recent releases that seek to relive the good ol' days, when music was 'real' and really funky:

1. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Genuine
A 2004 release on Brooklyn's excellent Daptone records, this is properly proper.

2. Spanky Wilson & The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Don't Joke With a Hungry Man
This one is a 2006 release, on Tru-Thoughts in the UK, and features a genuine 60s soul legend in Spanky Wilson. This updating of her sound for the 21st Century by Quantic (Will Holland) works pretty darn well. (Bonus: check out her 1969 recording of Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love' for the best cover version ever! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC2Je89JhS8)
