2centavos is starting off with an assortment of abrasive music. Among other artists, I'll be featuring an assortment of music from Mexico City based collective N.A.A.F.I, who will likely serve as a mainstay on this program. N.A.A.F.I is a love letter to Mexico's local music scene while simultaneously challenging the dominant musical narratives on a small and large scale through experimental techniques and uncomfortable soundscapes.
That said, the characterizing the collective can be somewhat difficult. As mentioned in a 2016 LA Times article on the collective, N.A.A.F.I's process:
"... includes resisting plans to box its sound into too-easy identity politics. N.A.A.F.I has seen some U.S. promoters send pitches that were overtly 'pandering, where they want to make it all about being Latino and brown,' Bustamante said. At the same time, N.A.A.F.I has a testy relationship with the idea of 'malinchismo,' or the sense that cosmopolitan Mexicans can sometimes look down on local culture."
An unashamedly proud Mexican-American myself, the group really connects and I'll try to pay great respect to the sounds I play on this show. Let's just see how this goes.
