best of the summer's new releases

Suck My Left One // 22.09.09 // New noises

This week's episode sees the return of the full SMLO contingent to the studio, rolling out of some of the new releases we've enjoyed over the summer break. Featuring new stuff from local band Miss The Occupier, plus Manchester grrrlpunks Vile Vile Creatures and ex-Electrelane afro-beat post-punk fusion from the excellent Trash Kit. Also featuring a resurrection of the Segment of the Dead, with this week's zombie-themed offering showing what happens when the drummer from Sepultura starts dabbling in grindcore-disco... yes, it's Mix Hell.

loud noise, new music

Suck My Left One // 01.04.09 // loud noise new music

On this week's show Kate & Olivia present a cornucopia of new and old noise, including shiny new tracks from Glasgow punks Doves of Disorder, all-girl Italian harcore 4-piece Sorelle Pestilenza and Melbourne shoulder-padded glampunks Suzanne Grae & the Katies.

If that's not enough, this week's Segment Of The Dead (where we play a new song about zombies every week) features some classic White Zombie, and if you're loving the cheese, listen in for some old-school Marie & Cherie Currie.

Tune in next week to win free stuff!

lock up your daughters

Suck My Left One // 12.03.09 // lock up your daughters

Well, tweak my nipples and call me a lesbag... this week on Suck My Left One, it's a takeover by Lucy and Sophie, editors of Glasgow's Lock Up Your Daughters magazine. Now renowned for single-handedly rescuing the Glasgow queer scene from a decade of mediocrity in the insipid clutches of the G1 group, for the last year they've been putting out their mag, and putting on notorious debauched disco parties at The Flying Duck. Expect loads of electro-trashy-queercore-disco beats, and a sneak preview of the next edition of LUYD magazine, out in April. Touch it!

lesboriffic

Suck My Left One // 05.03.09

Tonight on Suck My Left One, a year of careful groundwork finally pays off. Yes, until now the show has been cleverly disguised as a tribute to all things musically queercore, girlpunk and electrotrashy, but finally it's time to fulfill our real purpose - To expose the radio-listeners of greater Glasgow to an entire hour of lesbian spoken word. Mooohahaha. Featuring a live session from Edinburgh artists The Zorras, and prizes to give away for the best coming out poem of pain you email into us. Join in. We recruit.

pre-fm blow-out

Suck My Left One // 19.02.09 // pre-fm blow-out

Warning: this week's episode of Suck My Left One may include bad language, glamourising of drugs, violence and anti-social behaviour, and explicit sexual content (all within context and appropriate to the audience and hour of broadcast, of course). It may also contain material offensive to minority groups (but only facists and homophobes, we hope).

In the final episode before FM broadcast begins, and anticipating the eagle-eyed scrutiny of OFCOM, Kate and Olivia attempt to get it all out of their system. Those offended by facist-killing and lesbian rimming may wish to skip this one.

rockin' bones: farewell to lux interior

Suck My Left One // 11.02.09 // rockin' bones: farewell to lux interior

This week Kate and Olivia pay tribute to Lux Interior, who sadly passed away last week. That means lots of Cramps songs as well as a show full of the psychobilly trash-punk bands inspired by their acid/B-movie/comic book/rockabilly/punk aesthetic. We especially celebrate some of the all-girl psychobilly made possible by the ground-breaking music of The Cramps, such as Thee Merry Widows, The Deadutantes and The Formaldebrides. We also find some queer psychobilly, a genre whose time has surely come!

Here's to Lux, surely by now doing the zombie dance.

suck it and see

Suck My Left One // 04.02.09 // Suck it and see

This week's Suck My Left One showcases some older queer/grrl/lady music that we've loved on the show over the past year... shouty punk from the likes of The Baby Shakers and Comanechi, an 11-minute proggy wig-out from Sleater-Kinney, and some classic Patti Smith, plus a wee taster of folky lesbo spoken word acoustica from The Zorras who will be gracing us with a live session next month.

Get in touch if you have requests for the FM shows (we'll be going out on Thursdays 10pm from the 19th of March). World, beware.

60s-style girl-sounds

Suck My Left One // 19.11.08 // 60s-style girl-sounds

Inspired by the imminent arrival on these shores of Brooklyn all-girl surf-guitar punks The Vivian Girls, this week's show used this as a thinly-veiled excuse to play a bunch of marginally related sounds, including The Fnords, The Carrots, The Shangri-Las, Haight-Ashbury and The Pipettes. This was also a long-awaited excuse to play inadvertent psychedelic fabulousness from The Shaggs. If you've never heard it, listen now. If you can handle it.

Suck My Left One // 05.11.08 // hello-obama/in-your-face-bush

This week we played a plethora of tunes in celebration of the imminent departure of W. from the White House. It wasn't too smug. Well, maybe a little bit. A bit frazzled from staying up all night to watch the results, so the playlist may have been even more "ecclectic" than usual, but click "listen" to hear anti-Bush, pro-revolution treats from Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney, Partyline, Saul Williams & DJ Spooky, Public Enemy and lots n lots more.

rock-n-roll disco party

Suck My Left One // 01.10.08 // Rock-n-roll disco party

Thanks very much to BaNg!bAng! and Olivia F for steering the good ship Suck My Left One for the last two weeks. This week sees the return of Kate W, shambolic rambling, and schizophrenic play-lists.

The first half of the show will be celebrating the recent release of the 6th studio album of Australian rock collosses (collossi?) Magic Dirt, with a mini-special spanning some of their 16 years in music.

The second half of the show will segue (or more likely lurch gracelessly) into something completely different: disco party! Gold hot-pants at the ready, SMLO will be bringing you some of the butt-shakin'est dance tracks that we've been shimmying to over the summer.
