Flaming Torch of Soul

Soulful Allsorts // 1400-1600 19.05.12

a beacon of soul

Soulful Allsorts has its roots in a one off show I did on Subcity way back in in the early days. Dougal Perman heard it and when he set up Radiomagnetic it had a soul show on a Saturday. A regular guest was Fraser Dunn who gained his own show on a Sunday and eventually we moved over to Subcity.

Prior to that Malcolm Thwaite had done several shows on Subcity in its FM only days. He focussed on the sounds that came out of Memphis and other southern studios. There were very few soul shows on the internet prior to 2000. Mr Fine Wine who was on WFNU was one. Now there are hundreds.

We like to think we're still true to the original aim of playing what we think is soul and not be bounded by genres, sub classification, venues, countries and labels. We think soul is music is still being produced, high quality soul too not just records aping the classic styles of the sixties and seventies.

And yes we do feature those classic styles but we're not restricted by them.

We play soul from original sources mostly vinyl, CDs, occasionally MP3 downloads and if we ever find a cassette only release we have a Walkman on standby.
