By far the best soul show on the radio put together by enthusiasts who DJ and collect the best soul vinyl. We're proud to acknowledge we have more listeners to the archive edition than tune in Live but it's the live internet patter that makes the show what it is. Put forward by Subcity for a Student Radio Award in the Best Specialist Music Catagory 2008.

a beacon of soul
Soulful Allsorts // 19.05.12 // Flaming Torch of Soul
Soulful Allsorts has its roots in a one off show I did on Subcity way back in in the early days. Dougal Perman heard it and when he set up Radiomagnetic it had a soul show on a Saturday. A regular guest was Fraser Dunn who gained his own show on a Sunday and eventually we moved over to Subcity.
Prior to that Malcolm Thwaite had done several shows on Subcity in its FM only days. He focussed on the sounds that came out of Memphis and other southern studios. There were very few soul shows on the internet prior to 2000. Mr Fine Wine who was on WFNU was one. Now there are hundreds.
We like to think we're still true to the original aim of playing what we think is soul and not be bounded by genres, sub classification, venues, countries and labels. We think soul is music is still being produced, high quality soul too not just records aping the classic styles of the sixties and seventies.
And yes we do feature those classic styles but we're not restricted by them.
We play soul from original sources mostly vinyl, CDs, occasionally MP3 downloads and if we ever find a cassette only release we have a Walkman on standby.

record store day soul purchases
Last week show producer spent two hours in queue outside Mono to buy three 45s for £20 which is big sum of money for him to part on records.
He acknowledges that there were special release from last year's RSD still in the racks as he got closer to the counter.
Anyway he got his free cupcake and presenter Fraser Dunn phoned Monorail to confirm they still had a Clarence Carter EP and a Charles Bradley in the racks.
Expect to hear them today along with a couple of nods to Motown, two deep soul stunners and and a whole pile of records from the sixties up until last week.
You can tune into the show and participate via the Soulful Allsorts on Subcity Facebook page.
Don't forget South Side Soul at 111 Titwood Road tonight.
