the consumermas special ii

Pop Goes The Revolution // 18.12.09 // The Consumermas Special II

This week, as Consumermas looms, George attempts to avoid discussing that torid time of year altogether. Meanwhile, Nikki comes in full festive gear and parade about with tinself ladened tracks sure to warm even the coldest hearts... apart from George's that is.

So expect the show to veer between ignoring Christmas all together to suddenly praising how wonderful it is. Expect the playlist to do something similar. With non-Christmasy offerings from Kap Bambino, Our Lost Infantry and Marble Fairy, as well as more festive stuff from Jason Mraz, Sufjan Stevens, as well as an electro-synth version of Let It Snow and this year's official Chronically Depressing Christmas Anthem from Slow Club.

another friday

Pop Goes The Revolution // 04.12.09 // The Procrastinated Playlist

Building a playlist is a very good way to procrastinate.

That's why we've searched high and low for some good tunes this week. Returning to our ears our Heels Catch Fire, Kap Bambino and Futuristic Retro Champions, and making new appearences we have John Jacobs, The Plasticines, Galleries, and an epic 8 minute track by a band from down south.

Plus - the extra good news - is that Nikki is back this week. Which means the whole thing will be distinctly less geeky.

Pop Goes The Revolution // 30.10.09 // Halloween Fashion

Join George and Nikki as they discuss what all the cool kids will be sporting on Halloween night. Does putting 'zombie' in front of something make it cooler, how many people will go as Amy Winehouse, what will be this year's film to rip costume ideas off. Join them in thid discussion.

Also PGTR will be playing the brand new single by The French Wives - Halloween.

the pgtr takeover

Pop Goes The Revolution // 16.10.09 // Josh And Phil Takeover

Test Card's Phil Kennedy, and Subcity Spin's/Musics Head, Joshua Hill, bring a gothic apocolpyse to Pop Goes The Indie Weasel.

It's gonna be louder than the usual tiny guitar jams, as we take the music into funk slam jams, slow jams, long jams, scuzzy jams, psych jams, punk jams, musique concrete...

George and Nikki will be untied and returned next week.

casiokids competition

Pop Goes The Revolution // 09.10.09 // New Technologies: Vinyl

Pop Goes The Revolution was officially relaunched on Wednesday night (only three weeks after we came back to air) and now we're ready to really raise the roof.

This week we're branching out into new technologies, as George attempts to play something off vinyl. We have no idea how this will go. As of yet he can't work out how to connect it up to a USB port, but we're hopeful we'll get there.

However, for those of you wondering why such a risk would be taken - it is all in an attempt to offer a delicious prize to a lucky listener more advanced in the ways of the world than ourselves.

That lovely man, Josh, from Subcity Spin has given us a lovely 7 inch vinyl copy of a brand new release by Norwegian electro kings Casiokids. Tune into the show live or on listen again to find out how you could win a copy of the new single Finn Bikkjen as well as getting to hear the single and another exclusive track by Casiokids.

We've been relaunched - we're really here now - so be prepared.

has to be scene to be believed

Pop Goes The Revolution // 02.10.09 // Has To Be Scene To Be Believed

An interview with Moshi Moshi darlings Slow Club from Sheffield.

Exclsuive new tracks from Young Aviators, as well as tunes from Alan Pownall, The Perils, and others.

A complete run down of all the happenings for next Wednesday at Pivo Pivo at our extravagant relaunch night.

A superb prize give away featuring numerous pressies related to our relaunch night - a couple of CDs, some guest list places, maybe a tshirt. We'll find out how it goes.

A brilliant live acoustic set from the latest PGTR house band, Skinny Villains, as well as a nice chat with the band and a few songs chosen by the lads themselves.

All this plus the usual Nikki's Nostalgia, A Saving Grace, The Song Battle, and everyone's favourite Nikki's News.

This week we bring you a whole host of happy tunes.

We'll be playing a few downloads that you can get for free on the wonderful world of the internet, as well as breaking out a few tunes by the likes of Jocasta Sleeps, Kochka and Slow Club.

On top of all this we have been given exclusive access to the latest work by the Black Alley Screens as we reveal a very important announcement about the band.

Aside from this expect the usual chat about the latest happenings in Glasgow, the serving of Nikki's News and the side portions of cynicism.

Oh, and we'll also be discussing the Steve Lamacq show for... you know... a little bit.

scene and not heard

Pop Goes The Revolution // 18.09.09 // Scene But Not Heard

Pop Goes The Revolution finally returns to the airwaves on 106.6fm and www.subcity.org.

It has been a long and tremendous journey over the last few months, but at last we return.

The bad news is that Nikki will be unable to make the first half of the show. The plus side is that Hannah from Electric Lemonade will be returning to PGTR for Fizzy Pop Goes The Revolution II. Without the help of Nikki you can expect George's cynicism to fully let rip for the first hour until Nikki joins half way through to bring a slightly more joyous edge to the show and force the show to take a more optimistic turn - as we launch a new wave of excellent pop culture highlights to bring to the air.

Expect excellent new tunes from The Skinny Villains, The King Hats, as well as the return of Nikki's News, and the answer to all the important questions in life: why did o2 take over the ABC, what on Earth do Firewater think they're doing, is the September Issue worth watching, and should Nikki have brought that Lumberjack shirt?

super sexy announcement time

Pop Goes The Revolution // 14.05.09 // Super Sexy Announcement Time

So last week we may have announced that this week would be our last show. This however is not true, our run has been happily extended all the way till the 11th of June – yay. Apologies for the mix up, it is what I believe is known as the business as a total cock up.

We also said that as it was our last one, we would make this week special, however we haven’t gone back on the specialness of this week’s show, trust me there’s some good stuff in there.

First of all we will be showing a few highlights from the Mill’s musical catalogue, a vault of over a hundred or so free downloadable live tracks from some of the finest acts in Scotland. A very good thing indeed.

We’ll also be playing a couple of tracks off the spanking new Zoey Van Goey album, The Cage Was Unlocked All Along. It is indeed an excellent album.

Also, and quite frankly the most exciting bit. We will be announcing a brand new project from the PGTR team. We may only have five week’s left of our on-air lives this series, but on Thursday we’ll be telling you how PGTR will continue changing the world well into the summer and beyond!!!!!

So tune in to hear the announcement of our super sexy secret to the world, and we’ll tell you exactly what we’re going to be doing this July.

All this plus Nikki’s News will be giving you the low down on this week’s happenings in Glasgow. The Saving Grace and Nikki’s Nostalgia features will once more be hitting the iWaves, and if all this fun wasn’t enough we have more tunes by the likes of Belgrade, Nevada Base and Union Jackals.

The show is going to be bursting at the seems we’ve got so much packed in tomorrow.

So tune in at midday at www.subcity.org.

Peace out!

some music and some chat

Pop Goes The Revolution // 30.04.09 // Some Art, Some Hinterland, Some Music!

This week Nikki returns to the studio fresh from an exciting week at the Glasgow Art Fair. Expect all the low down on all the gossip from the Scottish art scene, as well as a discussion on all the highlights of the upcoming highlights in Glasgow coming up, particuarly the Hinterland Festival this weekend.

On top of that we have some excellent tunes from the likes of Julia & The Doogans, Kochka, How To Swim & Metronomy.

What more could you want at midday on a Thursday?

Tune in at www.subcity.org

another guest!

Pop Goes The Revolution // 23.04.09 // Special Guest: Gary McKenna (Pivo Pivo)

With Nikki away making sure that Glasgow Art Fair runs smoothly, George has been left to do his usual musical musings.

However to join him in his musical analysis this week he will be joined by Gary McKenna, one of the architects behind the now thriving gig scene at Pivo Pivo, one of the best small venues in Glasgow. In under two years Pivo Pivo has gone from an ordinary tucked away bar to now holding gigs on an almost every night of the week, often to packed out crowds with a brilliant sound.

With a fairly unique ticketing system aimed to counter-act the ‘pay to play’ epidemic in Glasgow, and with such an array of genres on offer throughout the week, Pivo Pivo is now becoming one of the most respected venues in Glasgow.

As well as discussing how we got to here, Gary will also be discussing the future for Pivo Pivo and the Glasgow music scene, as well as discussing his latest project Flatbeat – a company that aims to bring live bands right into your home.

On top of all of this Gary will be showing off a few of his favourite bands from the Flatbeat roster and from the backlog of Pivo Pivo gigs, as well as generally joining in with the usual banter that has cemented the Pop Goes The Revolution song-based brickwork together since its inception.

So tune in this Thursday at midday at www.subcity.org.

clearing the backlog

Pop Goes The Revolution // 16.04.09 // Clearing The Backlog

Given that in the last five weeks we have brough you four special episodes it has meant that the usual PGTR format has gone almost a little skeward, and furthermore the list of songs that George has been itching to play have slowly built up on his desk until the mountain of CDs now reaches the cieling.

So on this week's show we cure that 5 week itch and have a thoroughly good scratch at some excellent tunes as we bring you a whole bunch of songs we would've love to have brought you weeks ago but haven't been able to.

However with a five week backlog you can expect the very cream of the musical choices on offer, so tune in for the very finest in aural pleasure.

On top of all of this we'll be trying out a new feature! So tune in for that to.

Remember - be there at midday this Thursday or tune in afterwards on Listn Again.

Much Love,

PGTR

the trans-atlantic battle: us vs uk music

Pop Goes The Revolution // 09.04.09 // The Trans-Atlantic Battle: US vs UK Music

Prepare for a slightly different episode of Pop Goes The Revolution.

There are old arguments and rivalries to be settled this week.

For a long time George has held the firm believe the vast majority, with a few exceptions, of American music is generally God awful. He has persistently sided with the UK side of the Atlantic on every occasion refusing to let US music have any form of credibility in his mind.

Nikki meanwhile has long held the belief that not only is American music equal to the UK scene, but possibly even outstrips the music scene on this side of the pond. Having raided US record labels for the finest bands around she has come to the conclusion that the US is producing the most exciting music out there.

This argument has raged for a long time. Since well before Pop Goes The Revolution existed.

And now this week we put it to the test. George and Nikki have gone away and raided their music collection and chosen 5 songs from their chosen country that they particularly love, not necessarily the biggest bands from those countries, but 5 songs that embody their love for their chosen nation.

This Thursday they will play 5 tracks each, and then afterwards they will ask people to vote over the course of the week to choose between the two sets of 5 songs to decide once and for all whose love is more justified.

This is the Trans-Atlantic battle. 5 songs each from the entire history of UK and US pop music to choose from. Expect bitter arguments. Expect feuds. Expect smugness when the winner is announced next week. Let trans-Atlantic battle commence.

Tune in midday at www.subcity.org.

chris guttierez + dave cronin on pgtr

Pop Goes The Revolution // 02.04.09 // Chris Guttierez + Dave Cronin Guest On PGTR

As we continue to ram the airtime with more exciting guests than you can shake even your best shaking stick at, we once more welcome some very special guests into the studio...

So picture this, a self-published American author with various connections throughout American pop culture, and with one of the net's most successful blogs decides to do a UK book tour and in the process decides to bring along a friend of his who just so happens to have once been the bassist in the excellent, sadly no-more, American band 2*Sweet. They're both going to be in Glasgow for a day or two before they swim off on the rest of their UK tour and wonder what to do, and then it hits them, that the perfect thing to do is go and guest host on their favourite pop-culture based radio show in Glasgow.

Yes, this Thursday American author Chris Gutttierez and Dave Cronin will be joining Nikki and George to discuss the world of pop culture, music, America and anything else they can think of.

Tune in this Thursday at midday at www.subcity.org.

Not just content with bringing you one live session from an excellent Glasgow band, Pop Goes The Revolution has decided to bring you two sessions over its FM period, as this week to close us out on FM before we return to broadband we bring you Washington Irving.

Formed at just a pinch over a year ago Washington Irving are still a fresh faced group of musicians gradually making a name for themselves on the musical circuit. Now weeks away from releasing their debut single, and with a growing reputation, Washington Irving pop into Pop Goes The Revolution this Thursday for a chat, to choose a few songs and to play live from our green room.

the lafontaines in the subcity studio (at last)

Pop Goes The Revolution // 12.03.09 // The LaFontaines in the Subcity Studio (at last!!!)

Fresh from a headlining slot at the ABC2 and on the verge of releasing their anticipated debut EP, The LaFontaines arrive in the Subcity studio this week on Pop Goes The Revolution for a special one hour show.

Quickly rising up the ranks of the Glasgow music scene, and receiving praise from sources ranging from local radio to The Sunday Times, The LaFontaines seem to be winning respect and adoration wherever they land and play their eclectic combination of genres that has become their now distinctive sound.

Not only will The LaFontaines be in the studio joining George and Nikki in the usual Pop Goes The Revolution banter, choosing a few tunes, and answering any questions people have, but they will also playing a few acoustic tracks live on air from within our tiny studio.

And as a final bonus to listen in, if you listen in live to the show you can win a signed EP as well as a tshirt from the band themselves. So remember to tune into 106.6fm or www.subcity.org

From here the band already have a slot supporting Beardyman at his sold out King Tut’s shows, as well as a showing at this year’s Homecoming festival alongside the likes of Reverend & The Makers and The Enemy. With the amount of attention currently focussing on this band, and with their reputation for playing some stunning sets and quite frankly the best stage banter known in Glasgow, be sure to tune into The LaFontaines showing on Pop Goes The Revolution, this Thursday at midday, or anytime on Listen Again.

Radio won’t know what’s hit it…

A few quotes worthy of note:

“It shouldn’t work, but it does. The LaFontaines are the real deal” - Rachel Devine (The Sunday Times)

“The LaFontaines make Glasvegas sound like they come from Bearsden” - Tom Morton (BBC Radio Scotland)

“The LaFontaines keep it fresh with a fresh hybrid style that rocks hard!!” - MC Lars

high street fashion revolution

Pop Goes The Revolution // 05.03.09 // High Street Fashion

This week, instead of our original planned broadcast we will broadening our pop culture horizons and looking into the world of high-street fashion.

Our inaugural FM session’s second Cliff List battle brings the battle of the high street stores as we give you the chance to vote for Britain’s worst high street clothes shop. Whether your fed up with everything falling apart from Primark, the pretensions of Topshop, or whatever your hatred at the high street, now is your time to cast your vote and remove one.

With only a 24 hour open voting session before the show, every vote does count, so make sure to get voting by any of the usual ways. The Facebook group, the MySpace page, the Bebo page, the Subcity forum or email popgoestherevolution@googlemail.com to cast your vote.

As a very quick recap of the rules. The two leading stores at the time we go to air on Thursday will make it through to the on-air final where they fight for the last few votes until one of them is finally pushed off a cliff at the end of the episode.

Also remember to tune in for the return of Nikki’s News and a plethora of good songs from the likes of De Jour, French Wives, Baghdad Country Club, Look See Proof, Dumb Instrument and a host of other great independent and unsigned acts from around the UK and beyond.

Hope you listen in this Thursday.

There are no differences other than the date. But if you wish to check out the episode then go to www.subcity.org/shows/popgoestherevolution/

Rest assured a normal style Pop Goes The Revolution experience is still here though. So make sure to tune in this Thursday at midday on 106.6fm and www.subcity.org

i love it here

Pop Goes The Revolution // 26.02.09 // i love it here

Now that the Subcity signal has finally found fresh air, and is no longer confined to live underground in the usual ‘series of tubes’ that take it to your computer via the world wide web, we’ve decided that we quite like it on FM. The enjoyment of tuning the little radio to track down the Subcity waves scurrying through the air looking for a radio to talk to.

Therefore, here at Pop Goes The Revolution, we’ve decided we’re going to stay. Of course the problem is there are already a lot of these radio station type things hanging around clogging up the skies and having their waves knock each other out. Therefore, we’ve decided the only way forward is that one of them must go, and be forced off our Cliff to join the other things we’ve taken a disliking to.

After all, the things already sacrificed to our cliff need some form of radio entertainment, something has to broadcast to all those involved with Cliff Richard, The NME, Crocs, Eastenders, Box, The SECC, Sarah Palin, Costa Coffee, Facebook, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, The Waitresses, The Darkness, HMV and Brad Pitt.

So who shall entertain them and be gotten rid of once and for all. The Cliff List returns and is already poised to grab a radio station and make sure that it meets its cliff based doom.

For those who don’t know the rules, they’re simple. You nominate any radio station that you feel is the worst to have to put up with, then the two with the most votes are announced on air. The two then keep their votes and then have one more hour to fight it off on air for their survival as the votes continue to accumulate throughout the show. Then the radio station with the most votes at the end of the show is pushed off our metaphorical cliff and left to be forgotten.

Hate something? Push it off a cliff.

So, vote now. You can do this in many many ways. Either:

Go to our Facebook: ‘Pop Goes The Revolution’, join it, and vote there.
Go to our bebo: www.bebo.com/popgoestherevolution, join it and vote there.
Got to our MySpace: www.myspace.com/popgoestherevolution, and send us an email there.
Email us at : popgoestherevolution@googlemail.com
Or, last but certainly not least, click the comment on this episode tab at the bottom of this page, and you will be whisked away to the happy poll officially dedicated to it on the Subcity website.

Welcome to the cliff list. Now it’s up to your to tell us which radio station you hate the most and tune in at 106.6fm or www.subcity.org this Thursday to find out which radio station is declared Britain’s worst.

fizzy pop goes the revolution

Pop Goes The Revolution // 26.02.09 // i love it here

This week with Nikki unfortunately missing in action on the road to pop culture revolution, she will be unable to make Pop Goes The Revolution’s landing on FM.

However unwilling to let this affect our revolutionary momentum we have called up another participant from the ranks to help take charge this Thursday. This week, as a one off special, George will be joined by Hannah from the Subcity show Electric Lemonade (www.subcity.org/shows/electriclemonade). Rest assured though, that the show will continue it’s usual style. We will continue to introduce more songs by excellent independent and unsigned bands from around the country that no one has heard of, we will have the usual break down of all the pop culture and arts in our fair city over the coming week, another new and exciting film review from our specialist Becca, and last but not least the Cliff List lands once more (details of that to arrive on Monday).

So join George and Hannah from Electric Lemonade this Thursday as Pop Goes The Revolution goes all FM, as for one week the show becomes Fizzy Pop Goes The Revolution…

…did you see what we did with the names there? Fizzy… Lemonade… get it?

the red carpet... to a cliff

Pop Goes The Revolution // 12.02.09 // The Red Carpet... To A Cliff

Yes, it’s time for the Oscars, the annual celebration where the world’s most overpaid actors gather to celebrate the films that made them millions in a grand hall of extreme smugness.

However before they get to go to the pretty glitzy award ceremony we have to determine who can go. Due to the credit crunch there are not enough seats at this year’s Oscars for all of the Hollywood elite – they are apparently, one seat short. So we are going to remove that one extra person, by determining who is the most irritating and placing a large red carpet in front of them, and slowly guiding them along it until they plummet off our cliff.

Yes, this is the cliff list.

Nominate the most annoying actor/actress in Hollywood and the leading two will battle it out over the show until the loser is pushed off our glamorous cliff.

So, who in Hollywood gets your goat? Is it the child catcher Angelina Jolie, the inevitably irritating Brad Pitt, or everyone’s favourite man with one facial expression – Elijah Wood.

It’s up to you. Get nominating now. Reply to this post, join our Facebook, email on MySpace or email us directly at popgoestherevolution@gmail.com.

Tune in on Thursday to see who gets pushed off…

stuff that's not normally our cup of tea

Pop Goes The Revolution // 05.02.09 // Stuff That's Not Normally Our Cup Of Tea

Expect a genuinely different show this week...

For once we're going to strip away and take Pop Goes The Revolution into genres it's never really previously looked at. We'll be playing all the tunes we love that don't normally come under the thin Pop Goes The Revolution umbrella and sheltering them for an hour of airplay this Thursday at midday.

Expect a fair amount of folk, a touch of modern funk, some gypsy punk, something deangerously close to hip-hop, some funk rock, and possibly even some ambience music... we're contemplating it as we speak.

Tune in tomorrow for a fairly ecclectic Pop Goes The Revolution, while we get all our other musical loves out of our system before launching ourselves next week into another cliff list, those long wished for movie reviews and an exciting preview of PGTR's fm plans.

However this week, sit back and enjoy the stuff we love that's not normally our cup of tea.

Tune in at midday...

the compact disk conundrum

Pop Goes The Revolution // 29.01.09 // The Compact Disk Conundrum

The holidays have seen the Cliff List be dormant, sitting back, waiting to strike once more...

However this Thursday, we are proud to say, is the epic return of the Cliff List...

As Zavvi goes under, we see it as our responsibility to make sure that the CD industry continues to have some life left in it. However we are all truly aware that those of us with any actual interest in music generally hate the majority of places that sell CDs.

So here is your oppurtunity to rid the world of another CD outlet.

The main criteria for judging are simple, we're looking for the shop that: is the most commercial; costs the most; has the least range and stock; plays the worst music in it; has the most ignorant employees; and generally gets you so infuriated that everytime you walk in there you wonder why it Fopp was the first place to go bankrupt and why the world ever had to lose Solo music in Truro.

So people, get nominating now. The range is endless. It can be anywhere that sells CDs - whether that's the Supermarkets that tab it on the end of their shop, like Tescos; the internet shops that plagues you with comments such as "if you like this, you might like this", before offering you something you'd rather vomit on than listen to, like Amazon; or the high street stores who are supposed to be good at things like this, but just aren't, like HMV.

Comment on the episode on Subcity, vote at Facebook, vote at Bebo, email us at MySpace, PM me on the Subcity forum, go to the poll on the forum and vote, send an email to popgoestherevolution@gmail.com.

There are so many options - quite frankly there is no excuse for not voting at least ten times. So get voting now ladies and gents and let's finally get rid of Britain's worst CD seller.

an on-air funeral

Pop Goes The Revolution // 15.01.09 // An On-Air Funeral Service

This week, join us as we lament the passing of our favourite band I Say Marvin, as well as also re-living the memories of other great unknown bands from recent times that have also hung up their guitars and gone home.

It will be a sad pop goes the revolution, so break out the black suits and veils, and get a hankerchief to dab away the tears and we say goodbye to some amazing acts we will miss dearly.

Pop Goes The Revolution // 15.01.09 // An On-Air Funeral Service

We are fully aware that you were all hoping to come back from the Winter Break to a world of fun and happiness, but in the current climate it is simply not possible. The Revolution has recieved a terrible blow.

Somewhere over the new year break, I Say Marvin split.

Many years ago in a tiny pub George caught a small glimpse of this band, and his life literally changed. A couple of years later and some excellent gigs in Glasgow the band also won over a woman called Nikki.

Another year later saw George and Nikki sit down in a room talking to two people called Ryan and Suse. They played a song called Gloria, and a long and interesting discussion about the glories of I Say Marvin began. A month or so later a radio show called Pop Goes The Revolution was born.

Now the musical glory has ended. Expect what can only be described as a sad beginning to the year.

Ecpect a long mourning process this week as we look back on the life and times of I Say Marvin and share are favourite stories of the band as well as playing as many of their tracks as we can legally get away with.

There will be no cliff list, there will only be a little of Nikki's news. There will be tears. There will be hyperbole.

bah-humbug!!! pgtr's consumermas special!!!!

Pop Goes The Revolution // 18.12.08 // Bah-Humbug! PGTR's Consumermas Special!

As the rest of the Subcity schedule give into the festive spirit (we've heard rumours that Armed Response are going to play a show with just drum n bass versions of Silent Night and All I Want For Christmas Is You and Rock n Roll Meltdown will play prog versions of I'm Walking Through The Air and perusian psychodelia versions of White Christmas), Pop Goes The Revolution does what is to be expected of it and goes in the opposite direction.

This week instead of celebrating the wonders of Christmas George manifests into Scrooge himself and busily sets about telling everyone why they should go into the festive season in a pit of despair.

So the Cliff list arrives once more to select the worst Christmas single of all time. You can nominate now for the worst Christmas pop song of all time, right from Bing to Wizard. So get nominating now. And Nikki's News is around one more time to be telling you exactly what you should be doing with your free time.

Join us this Thursday as we promise you no more than two Christmas songs, both of which will be definitely pretty alternative, as well as plugging another 8 well selected bands from around the country in between the usual sarcastic cynical attacks on the structures of pop culture.

'tis the season of reality tv

Pop Goes The Revolution // 11.12.08 // 'Tis The Season of Reality TV...

This week on Pop Goes The Revolution the cliff list returns with a renewed energy to spill off its spite at the current television schedules.

As we all know December is the season of reality TV, where families across the country are brought together in front of a screen to watch idiots attempt to become famous and rich for being either untalented or for embaressing themselves publicly.

So here is your chance to get your reality TV grievances off your chest. Nominate now for the worst offender, and then the leading two programmes will keep their votes and be entered into the on-air Cliff List run off where they will fight off against each other until at the end of the show, the one with the most votes will get pushed off our cliff.

So join us this Thursday for the triumphant return of the Cliff List as well as some top new tunes from bands you've never heard of from across the country.

massive two hour art/goes/pop special

Pop Goes The Revolution // 27.11.08 // Art/Goes/Pop Launch Special

This week Pop Goes The Revolution rallies up the revolutionary feel as we arrive on Subcity with a massive TWO HOUR special filled with more extensive features than we ever thought we’d be able to cram onto a show.

On Monday the 1st December Leeds based Record Label Art/Goes/Pop will release a brand new compilation CD featuring some of the finest bands from across Glasgow entitled Glasgow School of Art Goes Pop. Since they first released the debut single by Popup, Art/Goes/Pop’s passion for the Glasgow music scene has swelled till near explosion, and they have already released more singles by Isosceles, Nacional and The Low Miffs.

Now they have taken their passion to the next level and have brought out a compilation album featuring some of the best 23 bands from across Glasgow including the likes of We Were Promised Jetpacks, Triple School, Punch & The Apostles, and Hidden Masters. At the same time, working in conjunction with The Glasgow School of Art they set up a project whereby twenty-three students would each design a series of limited edition 7” sleeves for each one of the bands on the album, perfectly combining Art and Pop into the one tight ball.

With the package of Art and Pop complete and ready to be unleashed, Pop Goes The Revolution brings you an in depth preview of what is to be expected. On a one off two-hour special of the show we will drop all our usual shackles of pessimism, and bring you a plethora of treats as we marvel in enthusiastic delight. The show will be featuring interviews with Plaaydoh, Ming Ming & The Ching Chings and Sparrow & The Workshop, plus we have three of the artists behind the art project guesting on the show and giving their opinions on the tunes, and to top if off there is Nacional talking to the show and playing a few acoustic songs from live in our tiny studio.

So tune in at the earlier time of 11am this Thursday as we bring you a close up look at the Glasgow School or Art Goes Pop compilation and you get to discover exactly what the world is missing out on, and get to be left in eager anticipation of the launch on Monday.

This is the revolution we have been waiting for.

a series of tubes and the social networking crisis

Pop Goes The Revolution // 13.11.08 // A Series of Tubes and the Social Networking Crisis

What we all have to remember is, in the words of Senator Ted Stevens, the man who in 2006 was in charge of regulating the internet, is that “the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes.” This accurate technical analysis gives a clear precise picture of the internet and just what is going wrong. The internet is slowing down and soon it’ll be useless to us all. As Ted Stevens himself pointed out “I just the other day got... an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday. I got it on Tuesday.”

Here at Pop Goes The Revolution we have once more found out the source of the problem, and yet again it lands in the pop culture remit. We have discovered that the sole reason for the slowing down of the internet is in fact Social Networking sites. It’s a combination of the pointless flashy MySpace pages, the billions of photos of their face from every conceivable angle on Bebo, and the constant updating of statuses on Facebook, beemed in by text message, saying such important messages as “I am now eating a yoghurt.”

There is only one logical conclusion. To save the internet we must remove a social networking site. Therefore, in order to protect mankind, Pop Goes The Revolution have send off the Cliff List team to examine the social networking mammoths and reckon now they have the ability to strip the cables and servers and send the chosen site plunging to its doom.*

The question is, which one will go. Well, naturally that choice is up to you. Yes, you can vote now in the biggest cliff list battle to date, the clash of the social networking sites. So pick your sides, and vote for which one you feel is worse. Do so either by voting on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/popgoestherevolution), on our Bebo (www.bebo.com/popgoestherevolution), on our Facebook, by emailing us at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk or by commenting to this episode here at Subcity.

So choose your voting method, and select your victim. Remember the rules, the two items with the most votes at the end of the week go through to the final live on air, where they will take their votes through and battle it out on air until one of them is declared the loser and pushed off our cliff.

Join us this Thursday to find out what will go.

As an irrelevant side note, Ted Stevens was wrong, the internet isn’t a series of tubes, it actually looks more like this - http://xkcd.com/256/

*We would like it noted that we are fully aware that all this chat is metaphorical, and this is a pre-emptive telling off for whatever smart arse decided to inform us that we can no longer have an account with whichever site loses the battle.

mocking a mocha

Pop Goes The Revolution // 06.11.08 // Mocking The Mocha

After its tempoary American break, and a couple of unusual weeks, Pop Goes The Revolution returns to what it does best.

It's simple, we lampoon everything we as wrong with pop culture and you join in our levels of slightly irritated banter as this week we analyse on just how much profit Starbucks make everytime you buy a coffee.

Yes, this week the Cliff List is a straight run off: Starbucks vs Costa - which is worse?

You can comment on this page and vote or text in or email in on the show to decide what coffee mamoth will meet a Cliff List doom as well as joining us in a general cynical banter mass.

As usual Nikki will be providing you a guide to the week's activities in Glasgow with all the hottest places to be, George will mumble things of a snobby and irritated nature, and the show will as of ever bring you some excellent tunes the world has forgotten to listen to.

The Revolution is as classic as it ever was. Pop Goes The Revolution 12-1 this Thursday.

us election special

Pop Goes The Revolution // 30.10.08 // US Election Special: Popping The Revolution

This week Pop Goes The Revolution is presented to you live from the oval office in the White House. It is from here that we hope to bring you the true guide to the American election through the eyes of pop culture.

Join us as we seemlessly prove that every song we play is about the US election, as well as giving you the true report on just what is happening in America through the medium of weak jokes and irelevant chat done to the backing music of the star spangled banner.

The usual features remain as well though, Nikki's news lives on and the 'cliff list' returns with an all new personal vengence.

Join us this Thursday at midday for satire galore, some excellent tunes, and a large collection of patriotic backings that will get you saying 'God bless America' quicker than an extradition trip to Guantanamo.

gigging in glasgow

Pop Goes The Revolution // 16.10.08 // The Glasgow Gig Experience

Last week saw the death of Eastenders as the final credits roled to black and the distinctive Thames River scenery was blown to smitherine in an exciting Nuclear explosion last episode that guaranteed it would never re-appear. The Cliff List claimed another victim.

This week the Cliff List inquisitors returned to their homested in Glasgow for a welcome break only to see the possibility of gigging ruined by the usless locations in which to go. Gigging in Glasgow has traditionally always been a joy (and by gigging we mean going to, or possibly if you're capable of, playing a musical gig; not the obscure form of celtic rowing which is never pleasant in Glasgow as no one wants to be in the clyde).

But traditionaly going to a gig in Glasgow has been a joy, but now so many venues have spawned, most of which are so poorly designed for the sound of live music, that when you get there you find your favourite band have been ruined by the horrifically overpriced drinks, dredful acoustics and moody staff.

Now we can get our revenge on a gig venue, as the Cliff List team gather their building equipment and poise, bulldozers at the ready, to take down a gig venue. Is the SECC with its 7000 seats but with no sound quality worthy of the plunge, is the Barfly with a pint of coke being half the price of a ticket (no exaggeration) worthy of the Cliff List wraith. Have your say and nominate this week's Cliff List nominations here on Subcity, on our MySpace (www.myspace.com/popgoestherevolution) on Bebo (www.bebo.com/popgoestherevolution), find us on Facebook or email us at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk

Tune in this Thursday to find out what is Glasgow's worst gig venue.

everybody needs good neighbours...

Pop Goes The Revolution // 09.10.08 // Everybody Needs Good Neighbours...

The Cliff List has so far killed Cliff Richard, The NME and Crocs; now as it continues its reign of pop culture terror it arrives at the gates of television land, ready to unleash its unquestioning condemnation onto its next victim: the TV Soap.

Ever since the Archers arrived on our airwaves hundreds of years ago this nation has become addicted to soaps, and now the sheer number of them threatens us like bullfrogs in Australia. The only option is a cull. This week one soap will go off our cliff to plummet down with the only thing to cushion it from the rocks being the Crocs from last week.

So you can nominate now, as of ever the worst two will take their votes into the final and run off against each other over the course of the show until at the end, one of them gets pushed off!

So get voting now. Whether you hate Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Doctors, Hollyoaks, Brookside, Neighbours, Home & Away, Crossroads, The Bill, Holby City, or any others then this is your chance to remove one from society. Get voting now.

As of ever you can comment on the show and vote that way, go to Facebook and vote there, you can go to MySpace and email us, you can go to Bebo and comment us, or you can email us at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk. There are just so many options.

So get nominating and don't forget to tune in at our brand new time of 12pm on THURSDAY!

new time and day!!!!

Pop Goes The Revolution // 09.10.08 // Everybody Needs Good Neighbours...

Just a quick note to say in advance that next week Pop Goes The Revolution will be airing to you from a new timeslot and on a different day. From now on we will be on at 12pm on Thursdays. So tune in on the 9th October for more Pop Goes The Revolution when George will make his triumphant return from wherever he was.

fashion & presenters

Pop Goes The Revolution // 03.10.08 // Fashion Faux-Pas

Unfortunately due to extraneous factors George will not be in the studio this week. However Nikki will still be there at the helm to direct the Revolution on its steady course.

It’s also possibly a good thing that George will not be there this week, as this week the Cliff List turns its cynical eye towards fashion, a subject which George knows nothing about. To replace him Nikki will be joined by close friend, fashion expert, and Glasgow’s largest gossip, Lorna, as well as another close friend, the witty token emo, Allan. The two guests and Nikki will be directing the Cliff List to its course as well as bringing you the usual guide to music and events throughout this fair city.

However, as of ever we still need nominations for our cliff list, so begin nominating now. Are full body tracksuits the biggest sin, what about knee-length leggings, or those stupid Croc things people where on their feet. Nominate the popular fashion fascination that you find most annoying and if you’re lucky you may just find it removed from our world.

Please start nominating now. As of ever you can do this on the Subcity website, you can nominate at MySpace (www.myspace.com/popgoestherevolution), join us at Facebook, or email your nomination to popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk.

Please send in the nominations, and join a slightly different Pop Goes The Revolution this Friday for an exciting journey into the depths of pop culture.

the nme, q, kerrang? which is most rubbish?

Pop Goes The Revolution // 26.09.08 // The Q to Be The Enemy of The NME

Last week as we looked ashamed at the dreadful pun we pushed off Cliff Richard's Millenium Prayer off the Cliff and on its plummeting journey.

This week the Cliff List Inquisittion has moved its territory and is now searching the world of music magazines for something so dreadful that it must meet its doom at the bottom of a cliff.

So, this week, you can decide what music magazine deserves to meet its end. Does NME stand for nauseating musical excrement , has Q ruined the 17th letter of the alphabet, is Scotland's List magazine at the bottom of your list, is Kerrang just pants? You can decide, you can vote now by joining our Facebook page, or on our MySpace. The leadng two by Friday will battle it out over the course of the show before one is condemned to the rocks beneath.

If you want you can even email your vote for the worst music magazine at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk

As a side we will also be discussing the migrationa patterns of Snap Fax sellers, how to make Hadrons cool, and inevitably playing some excellent music that you will hopefully have never heard before.

beginning this friday...

Pop Goes The Revolution // 19.09.08 // In The Beginning...

Join us this Friday afternoon for a brand new show on Subcity radio where in between some excellent tunes we will also be answering the all important questions of: how many leaflets can one human being collect in a week? what is the most useless fresher's week freebie? and what is it that makes Cliff Richard so annoying?

We hope you will join us at the beginning of our journey as we start the pop culture revolution.

Posted at 17:26, 16th September 2008

nominations now open for the "cliff list"

Each week on the show we will be asking yourselves to vote on a particular piece of pop-culture horror. At the end of the show the item deemed to be the worst by public vote will be pushed off a cliff, and as if by psychological treatment, will be removed from our lives so that we may all be more fulfilled. However, the question is, just what should go off the cliff?

You can nominate anything from pop culture that you like. If there's a movie you despise, a song that makes you have to leave nightclub floors, a magazine you have to buy just so you can set fire to it, or a band that makes you throw the radio through a wondow everytime they're played; whatever it is that you loath from our world you can get rid of it, and have it banished off the edge of our cliff.

So get nomainating now. Each week will we take two of the best items and bring them to the table to be voted on by you, and at the end of the show, one of them is going.

Send in your nominations to us live on air, or alternatively email us at popgoestherevolution@hotmail.co.uk, or for a third alternative join us on our Facebook group or MySpace and nominate there.

The cliff list begins.
