psychedelic, baby! - sat 6th march 2010 - 1-2 pm

Journeys // 06.03.10 // Psychedelic, Baby!

Hey folks,

Apologies for the lack of a show last week. Was just too busy to get it put together and, rather than bring you inferior product, I decided I needed a week off to recharge the old musical batteries!

This week's show follows in the footsteps of the Rock 'n' Roll show of last time, making the short trip from there into '60s psychedelia.

Almost everybody with a record deal went psychedelic in the late 1960s and I'll be playing a selection of some of the original psyche pioneers, such as the likes of the 13th Floor Elevators, Country Joe & The Fish, The Electric Prunes, Love and Jefferson Airplane - as well as some less likely psychedelic dabblers, such as The Temptations and Muddy Waters.

There is no doubting that The Beatles were the band that most succesfully commercialised the psychedelic sound and this week's Weird But Wonderful vote features a couple of songs related to that fact:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Biu95fyvmLI

1. John Fred & The Playboys - Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)

An affectionate lampooning of probably the most well know song about drugs ever recorded; 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', this near-contemporaneous 'cover' actually knocked 'Hello, Goodbye' off the top of the US singles chart in January 1968.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DjWpq8Oyoc

2. Candyflip - Strawberry Fields Forever

Named for the rather dubious practice of taking LSD and Ecstasy in tandem, Candyflip produced one of the most cynical pieces of over-earnest retro-psyche-pop of the whole 'Madstock' era. Although it manages to ruin not just a Beatles classic, but also the 'Funky Drummer' break used so famously in the previous year's Stone Rose track 'Fool's Gold' (although on that track it was recreated by the drummer Mani rather than sampled, I think); I still, for some unknown reason, quite like this track!?!

the blues had a baby - sat 20th feb 2010 - 1-2pm

Journeys // 20.02.10 // The Blues Had A Baby...

Hey folks,

Not had much time for the show this week, so gonna keep this reasonably brief.

Due to the inexcusable and terrible inconsistency of a certain SPL football team, I have definitely had the blues this week. Since around 9.30 PM on Tuesday to be exact.

However, this week's show is about escaping those blues rather than wallowing in them, so I'll be playing the much more chipper 'son of the Blues' - good ol' fashioned Rock 'n' Roll!

Expect to hear from the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Big Mama Thornton, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Frankie Lymon, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, as well as whoever else I can squeeze in!

This week's Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of songs with Rock & Roll in the title:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHyUYxBXLdc

1. Led Zeppelin - Rock & Roll

Rocky.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjAi7MgRBhM

2. Apparat Organ Quartet - Stereo Rock & Roll

Rolly.

journeys - we got latin soul - sat 13th feb 2010 -

Journeys // 13.02.10 // We Got Latin Soul

Hey folks,

This week's show jumps on the BBC's recent Latin music bandwagon (http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/latinmusicusa/).

I'll be playing a selection of Nuyorican, Cuban, Mexican, Brazilian, Puerto Rican and other Latin-based tunes.

Artists likely to features include Mongo Santamaria, Joe Bataan, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Ray Barretto, Jorge Ben and more.

The Weird But Wonderful contenders are plucked from the excellent 1996 Masters At Work collaboration with a number of Latin music legends; the eponymous album, 'Nuyorican Soul':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVHW1LCE6vI

1. Nuyorican Soul ft. India - Runaway

Originally recorded by the Salsoul Orchestra, with Loleatta Holloway on vocals, back in 1977; this version is pretty faithful and features a number of the original Salsoul musicians.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIZnbWl3qbw

2. Nuyorican Soul ft. Jocelyn Brown - I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun

Another fairly faithful (but updated for the House generation) cover - this time of the Rotary Connection's 1971 original.

abso-flute-ly fabulous - sat 6th feb 2010 - 1-2 pm

Journeys // 06.02.10 // Abso-flute-ly Fabulous

Hey folks,

This week's show features a selection of flute heavy tunes. This being Journeys they will be mainly on a soulful, funky kinda tip and will feature artists such as Bobbi Humphries, Herbie Mann, Ken Munson, Moe Koffman, Jethro Tull, Deodato, Manu Dibango, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and as many more as I can squeeze into an hour.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of tracks that have only one thing in common: both have the word 'Flute' in the title, but, despite this bold advertisement, appear to contain no actual flute in the track... Weird alright:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTVVEtfxwOk

1. Leftfield - Black Flute

From their massive 1995 album 'Leftism'. Banging.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSBdtsNSogg

2. The Cranes - Flute Song

Some shoegazing indie from the Portsmouth gloom-meisters' 2001 album, 'Future Songs'. Moody.

viva nigeria! - saturday 30th jan 2010 - 1-2 pm

Journeys // 30.01.10 // Viva Nigeria!

Hey folks,

This week's show is a quick blast through some West African music.

I'll be playing a load of 1970s and 1980s rock, funk, afrobeat and soul from Nigeria. Expect to hear Fela Kuti & The Africa 70, Sahara All Stars Of Jos, Orlando Julius & His Modern Aces, The Don Isaac Ezekiel Combination, Sunny Risky & The Vitamin Explosions and as many more exotically named bands as I can possibly squeeze in!

As you may know, I am a particular fan of Fela Kuti, a man who took Nigerian instruments, beats and rebel attitude and combined it with American soul and funk, to come up with a whole new musical style. He christened it Afrobeat and proceeded to spend the next 30 years or so creating funky protest songs aimed at the various dictators that ruled Nigeria during the period; as well as preaching Pan-African consciousness and liberation. He was jailed and beaten on a few occassions, but continued to rail against oppression and injustice until his untimely death in 1997 (believed to be AIDS related - he wasn't exactly shy around the ladies).

There is currently a musical running on Broadway in New York, New York based on Fela's music and life-story (called 'Fela!'). The show's 'above the title' producers (Will Smith & Shawn 'Jay Z' Carter) are this week's Weird But Wonderful contenders:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FFrCZNNCeU

1. DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince - Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble

This number was Will Smith's debut in the world of pop-rap. It samples the theme from 'I Dream Of Jeannie' (a 1960s US sitcom that starred Larry 'JR from Dallas' Hagman as an astronaut married to Barbara Eden's genie - hilarity ensued). I bought it on 12" vinyl from Woolworth's in 1986. No idea where it is now, mind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YE6s-uleT0

2. Jay Z - Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)

Showing an early interest in the stage musical genre, Jay samples 'Annie'. Completely without irony, apparently. It is infuriatingly catchy, though.

land of 1000 dances - sat 23rd jan 2009, 1-2 pm

Journeys // 23.01.10 // Land Of 1000 Dances

Hey folks,

Journeys go back down to an hour for the foreseeable - Saturdays 1-2 PM.

This week's show sees us on a brief tour round some dance crazes of the 50s and 60s. Expect to twist, shing-a-ling, boogaloo, popcorn, mashed potato, pony and swim all over the place. Artists will include Chubby Checker, The Meters, James Brown, Ray Barretto, Rufus Thomas, The Trashmen and as many more as I can squeeze into an hour.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of acts who don't much care what moves we do, just as long as we hit the floor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOx81aG-EN4

1. Chic - Everybody Dance

D-I-S-C-O! Bernard Edwards + Nile Rodgers = Quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uaFa6d8ev4

2. ESG - Dance

Cracking early 80s electro-breakdance-hip-hop-punk-pop.

old news - sat 16th jan 2010 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 16.01.10 // Old News

Hey there folks,

Having brought you the contractually obliged (having advertised it so long ago) rain-based show last week, I am now ready to kick off 2010 good-style!

This week's show is a review of the music that was new to me in 2009. That doesn't, of course, actually mean 'new' music. This is Journeys not the NME. So, I will be playing a selection of decades-old tunes that I heard for the first time in 2009. Simples.

It will also act as a taster of sorts for upcoming shows, featuring, as it will, a genre-busting selection of funk, soul, reggae, African, Cuban, electronic, Brazilian, psychedelic, indie and erm... probably loads of other forms of music that I can't even think of just now...

No Spotlight this week, so that I can just cram in as many tunes as possible.

The Weird But Wonderful vote features just about the only two bands whose new releases I paid any sort of attention to in 2009 (and only because I'm already a fan):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmGNo8RL5kM

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero

From the album 'It's Blitz!'. They still f*cking rock! And Karen O is still going all out for the 'arty-kook-punk' vibe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf7vlAVVHyE

2. Doves - Push Me On

B-Side to the single 'Kingdom Of Rust', from the album of the same name. One of my favourite live acts ever. Have seen them a few times, the most memorable being the Barrowlands Ballroom here in good old Glasgow toon, just after The Last Broadcast came out. Sweet.

Journeys // 09.01.10 // 9 Million Rainy Days

***THIS SHOW WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR 5TH DECEMBER 2009***

Hey folks,

Rather than a genre-based theme, this week's show is dedicated to the incredible amounts of water that have been falling out of the skies over Glasgow, and the rest of the UK, the last couple of weeks.

Expect a genre-busting selection of precipitation inspired tunes fom the likes of The Beta Band, Parliament, The Beatles, Brook Benton, Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band, Chopin and as many more as I can squeeze in...

(Now that the weather has changed expect some bonus snow-related sounds...)

The Weird But Wonderful vote is 90% weird this week, featuring a couple of rock-radio style classics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mSkZU8IkjE&feature=fvw

1. Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone

electricity - sat 28th nov 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 28.11.09 // Electricity

Hey folks,

I don't know if those of you based in the UK caught the BBC 4 documentary, 'Synth Britannia' the other week? I did - and guess what this week's show is all about?

Yes, it is a total rip off of... er... I mean fascinating companion piece to that very TV show.

Expect to hear a selection of predictably left-field synth classics, as well as some more chart friendly acts too. They are set to include the likes of Duran Duran, Joy Division, The Pet Shop Boys, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Gary Numan, OMD, Giorgio Moroder and more.

The Spotlight is on a band I had forgotten I liked until I watched 'Synth Britannia': Depeche Mode. As usual, it won't involve any rocket science. I'll just be playing a short selection of some of the songs from their first few albums what I really likes.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of monster snyth No. 1s (which are also a little bit No. 2):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EHpozHn-QA

1. The Human League - Don't You Want Me?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cCI_XDQWb0

2. Soft Cell - Tainted Love

instru-mental ii - sat 21st nov 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 21.11.09 // Instru-Mental II

Hey there folks,

This week's show is back at the old regular time of 12-2 PM.

I'll be playing a selection of tunes without (many) lyrics; starting out with some 1950s and 1960s 'novelty' classics and then concentrating on the more funky, soulful side of things. Expect to hear from the likes of The Shadows, Lord Rockingham's XI, The Dave Pike Set, The Buena Vistas, The Above Average Black Band, Peter King, The Meters, Ennio Morricone and loads more.

The Spotlight is, for no particular reason, on French 'Library' funk this week. Library (or Production) Music is the name given to the music owned by production music libraries and licensed to customers for use in film, television, radio and other media. Although this definition includes music of all imagineable genres, the name has been taken up by music-heads to refer to a style of 1960s/70s, 'soundtracky' instrumental music, produced by a legion of relatively anonymous, but none-the-less massively talented session musicians and writers. I'll be playing a few tracks in that general style that I reckon are great. And that are from France.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of tracks called, 'Words'. (Am I a genius or what?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IasCZL072fQ

1. Missing Persons - Words

Lady Gaga's mom? Or just a severely wacky 80s pop combo?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaEWlYHrF6w

2. Doves - Words

In my opinion, a classic. But it ain't up to me is it...?

flowers of scotland - sat 14th nov 2009 - 1-2 pm

Journeys // 14.11.09 // Flowers Of Scotland

Hey folks,

After a brief hiatus, Journeys returns to continue the 2009/10 season - at the all-new show time of 1-2 PM.

This week's show is a celebration of the greatest little nation on Earth, Scotland!

I'll be playing a wee selection of tunes from the likes of Alex Harvey, Marmalade, Orange Juice, Stealer's Wheel, The Poets and however many more I can squeeze in to one hour.

The Spotlight this week is on one of my favourite bands of all time; The Beta Band. In an all too short career, the Beta Band released just 3 seminal EPs and 3 full-length albums (as well as a handful of singles). I'll be playing a small selection of tracks by them that I like a lot.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between what must be a couple of the best known Scottish pop songs ever:

http://www.myvideo.at/watch/1145137

1. The Bluebells - Young At Heart

Originally written for and recorded by Bananarama, this much amended version was twice a hit for The Bluebells; first in 1984 and then again in 1993 (when it was No. 1 for 4 weeks), after featuring in a Volkswagen ad. The latter success inspiring violinist Bobby Valentino (the session violinist on the track) to sue for joint authorship.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM0sTNtWDiI&feature=fvst

2. The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

A song that must have formed the finale to a million drunken nights around the world, and which has also charted twice. First on original release in 1988 and again, when an alternative version featuring Peter Kay (as Brian Potter) and Matt Lucas (as Andy Pipkin) was released for Comic Relief, in 2007 (it was No.1 for 3 weeks - although I'm not sure anyone pays much attention to the charts anymore?). I am going to see them live on Friday the 13th.

on a break...

Hey folks,

Sorry for not letting you know in advance, but there was no show this week and there will be none next week either.

This is due to a shake up at Subcity that has seen a whole load of new shows get added (hurray!) and my Saturday 12-2 slot disappear (boo!).

I am currently locked in a series of sensitive, high-level negotiations with the Subcity controllers and hope to return on Saturday the 14th November 1-2 PM...

I'll let you know! :)

everything gonna be alright - 24/10/09 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 24.10.09 // Everything Gonna Be Alright

Hey folks,

This week's show is a delve into the Blues.

I'll be playing some Delta Blues, some Chicago Blues, some Piedmont (East Coast) Blues, some Blues-Rock, some Gospel Blues, some British Blues and erm... some other types of Blues that you can find on Wikipedia (like what I just done)...

Expect to hear from the likes of Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Cream, Lightnin' Hopkins, Leadbelly, Josh White, Howlin' Wolf, The Yardbirds and many more!

The Spotlight this week is on one of the earliest and certainly one of the most influential and legendary Blues players of all time; Robert Johnson. The story goes that he was advised to go to the crossroads with his guitar, where it was tuned, played and given back to him by Satan himself. In exchange for his mortal soul of course. From then on he could play, write and sing the Blues better than anyone ever had before.

The truth is that not a whole lot is really known about Robert Johnson. What is known is based mainly on recollections from his surviving contemporaries, garnered during interviews that took place during the Blues revival of the 1960s. His recording career lasted just two years: 1936-1937, and he died in 1938 at the age of just 27.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of tracks that have nothing to do with the Blues (just to break things up):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQLWF_ItzYs

1. Neil Diamond - Forever In Blue Jeans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98P-gu_vMRc

2. ELO - Mr Blue Sky

out of africa part deux - sat 10th oct '09 12-2 pm

Journeys // 10.10.09 // Out Of Africa Part Deux

Hey folks,

For this week's show I will be doing my best to represent an entire continent; Africa (had you guessed?).

I'll be playing a selection of tunes from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon and some other countries. All of them African.

I'll be 'Spotlighting' Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Songwriter, singer, band-leader, multi-instrumentalist, Afrobeat pioneer, political activist, thorn in the side of Nigerian and other African dictatorships and damn funky dude. He combined Yoruba and other African rhythms with American funk, soul and jazz (but mostly funk), to create a whole new thing; Afrobeat. In a shocking break with convention, I'll be playing a few favourite tracks.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of tracks from UK bands, that rather tangentially have 'Afrika' in their titles...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLBRhX8G22M

1. Leftfield ft. Afrika Bambaataa - Afrika Shox

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRC7zKfKomc

Journeys // 03.10.09 // Soul L-O-V-E-R

Hey folks,

Due to illness last week and work commitments this week (I will be sunning myself in Loughborough for the end of the week), I haven't had much time to devote to the show!

There will be a show this week though, and I'll be playing a selection of 1960s soul and funk. Expect to hear the likes of Gladys Knight & The Pips, Nina Simone, The Latinaires, Garnett Mimms, Mutt & Jeffo, The Chambers Brothers, Billy Preston and pure hunners mare...

The Spotlight this week is on Lou Courtney. A funky soulster who should be much better known than he is. Can you guess what I will be doing? Yes, I will be playing a few of my favourite tracks of his! Nice.

The Weird But Wonderful vote sees a couple of British soul-boys go head to head:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFXcHD0z3ZY

1. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl

Probably his most famous song, with millions of airplays registered on US radio, Van Morrison claims that he has never received a penny from it - due to the contract he ill-advisedly signed at the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PmRNUToamI

2. Joe Cocker - Woman To Woman

The track that Tupac and Dr. Dre turned into 'California Love'. Nuff said.

slave to the riddim - sat 19/09/09 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 19.09.09 // Slave To The Riddim

****SUBCITY RADIO IS ON 106.6 FM IN GLASGOW THIS WEEK UNTIL THE 20TH SEPTEMBER****

Hey folks,

This week I'll be playing a selection of my favourite reggae and dub tracks, in an attempt to string out the Glaswegian summer for just a few more days!

I'll also be taking a look at the Jamaican phenomemon of the 'riddim'.

A 'riddim' is basically the instrumental track taken from a pre-existing song - mainly, but not always limited to, the drum track and bassline - which is then used to create a new version or an entirely new track.

There are a whole host of 'riddims' used in Jamaican music; with favoured riddims being used over and over again as the years roll on.

I'll play some examples of this during the show and will also be focussing on the phenomenon during the Spotlight section. The Spotlight will feature several versions of a 1969 Little Richard song that was covered in a reggae version shortly after its release, and which has reappeared in Jamican music again and again ever since, in various incarnations.

The Weird But Wonderful vote features some white British reggae (or ska if you want to be pedantic):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-uyWAe0NhQ

1. Madness - One Step Beyond

Originally recorded by Prince Buster, Madness stay pretty faithful to the original and cover it with genuine affection - and humour, of course; it being Madness and all that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVcD1xAMTo8&feature=related

2. The Specials - A Message To You Rudy

Another pretty faithful cover (this time of the Dandy Livingstone original), this is probably my favourite Two Tone track ever.

música popular brasileira 12/09/09 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 12.09.09 // Música Popular Brasileira

Hey folks,

Finally, the moment you have been wishing for all summer is almost upon us!

What do you mean, 'What?'! It's the return of Journeys, of course!

This week's show sees us travel to the 'City of God' for a delve into 1960s and '70s MPB.

Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) started out in the mid 1960s as a left-wing political and artistic as well as musical movement, in opposition to the prevailing political elites of the time. These elites were characterised by military dictatorship, concentration of land ownership and good old-fashioned imperialism. Artists' criticisms of injustice, corruption and repression had to be veiled (at least thinly), as governments of the time sought to control all media output, including the arts. So a brand of popular national music was developed, that sang of love and fraternity and made abstract references to freedom and equality.

Pretty quickly, however (and despite the poverty and inequalities remaining), MPB became less synonymous with left-wing politics, and referred more to a certain aesthetic quality in the music, which blends (in various quantities) influences and elements as diverse as bossa nova, samba, traditional Brazilian 'Indian' music, Catholic plainsong (imported by the Portuguese colonisers since the 15th Century), European classical, and also contemporary American pop, soul and funk.

I'll be playing a selection of old-school MPB, featuring artists such as Gilberto Gil, Copa 7, Caetano Veloso, Tim Maia, Elis Regina, Arthur Verocai and as many more as I can squeeze in.

The Spotlight this week is on Jorge Ben. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, Ben is, rightly, phenomenally famous in his own nation, but, criminally, barely known outside. In a career that kicked off in the early 60s, Ben has released around 40 albums, combining bossa nova, samba, soul and funk (and a myriad of other influences) - and is still going strong. I'll be playing a few of my favourite tracks of his.

In a new feature, called 'Pick Your Own', I am looking for listeners' picks from within the week's theme. So if you have any favourite Brazilian tracks or artists that you want to hear... let me know! Either here and now, or by getting in touch during the show. If I like the sound of the suggestion and I have it to hand, I will play it out - otherwise I'll do my best to get hold of it for the next week's show.

I'll be playing MPB from the beginning of the 60s up to the end of the 70s, but, of course, MPB didn't stop in 1979, and the Weird But Wonderful choices this week reflect that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2QBbNyvWdY

1. Bossacucanova Feat. Adriana Calcanhotto - Previsao

Released in 2006, Bossacucanova update the traditional bossa nova sound. Ably assisted here by Adriana Calcanhotto's sultry vocal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsfMrxg5Fd4

2. BiD Ft. Seu Jorge - E Depois

Seu Jorge is well known to anyone who has seen 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou', where he plays Pele dos Santos (and memorably sings Life On Mars in Portuguese on the soundtrack). He also pops up in 'City of God'. BiD (Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist) collaborates with him here in 2004.

let the good times roll - sun 14th june - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 14.06.09 // Let The Good Times Roll

Hey folks,

This week's show is finally the actual final show of the season!

Having already done a premature finale show (http://www.subcity.org/shows/journeys/6bce1), I will, undaunted, once again be completely abandoning the themed format, and will be treating you to two-hours of whatever I feel like playing.

No Spotlight this week, just even more tunes.

There is a Weird But Wonderful vote though. It's between a couple of my favourite 'early 21st Century indie dance rock' bands, both of whom I saw live at the Glasgow Barrowlands and fell in love with:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ospxlZZM2Hw

1. The Music - Take The Long Road And Walk It

The eponymous first album from this Leeds outfit (released 2002) was blisteringly good. They've failed to live up to it in my view, but continue to do sterling work never the less.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75oT42sH-iE

2. The Beta Band - Squares

Formed in St Andrews in the late 90s, this is a band that should have been massive, but who only ever bubbled under. They split in 2004, but parts live on in various guises, such as The Aliens and Black Affair.

disco stu - sun 7th june 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 07.06.09 // Disco Stu

Hey folks,

For this week's show (the penultimate Journeys of the season), I am whisking us all off to 1970s New York. To the la-la land of glitterballs, white stay-press suits and dark glasses indoors.

I'll be playing a selection of classic Disco tracks, whilst hopefully avoiding as much of the cheese as possible and bringing you only the cream of the crop.

Expect to hear from the likes of Donna Summer (with Giorgio Moroder), Loleatta Holloway (with The Salsoul Orchestra), Ashford & Simpson, The Chi-Lites, Al Hudson & The Soul Syndicate, Grace Jones, Donna McGhee, Chic, Martin Circus, Cerrone, Sister Sledge and as many more as I can cram into 2 hours.

As most folks know, House music and the many myriad forms of dance music that have followed on, owe a massive debt to Disco (which grew out of Soul and Funk - both of which still wield their own massive influences over the dance genre).

One of the people who helped smooth the way is the subject of this week's Spotlight.

His name is Tom Moulton, Disco producer/remixer extraordinaire. Credited with 'inventing' the remix, the breakdown and (with Sound Engineer Jose Rodriguez) the 10" and then 12" single.

The 12" meant that the grooves could be spread out, and allowed for recording at much higher volumes, with better fidelity and bass that you could actually hear.

I'll be playing a few of my favourites from the many dozens (or is it hundreds?) of records that have printed upon them the legend, 'A Tom Moulton Mix'.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of cheesey Disco titans. Neither of which are that bad, but which are representative of the kind of track I won't be playing during the show (well not that much anyway):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHWeuQyFouo

1. The Bee Gees - Staying Alive

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBR2G-iI3-I

funk international - sun 17th may - 12-2 pm‏

Journeys // 17.05.09 // Funk International

Hey folks,

This week's show is a collection of premium funk from around the globe. I'll be playing funk from the US of A, Europe, South America, Africa and Bollywood.

Expect to hear from the likes of Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, Airto Fogo, Oscar Sulley, The JBs, The Kay Gees, Kalyanji Anandji and more.

The Spotlight this week is on a man who should be a legend of funk, but who is instead barely known. Eddie Bo started making soul records in the 1950s and by the mid to late 60s was one of the busiest writer/performer/producer/label owner/arrangers in the States. He's judged to have released more singles in New Orleans than anyone other than Fats Domino. He started making funk in the mid 60s and has released a barrel-load of classics; both under his own name and various pseudonyms. He sadly passed away on March 18th of this year, and this tribute is long overdue. I'll be playing a tiny selection of my favourites.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is a clash between the only two British acts making an appearance. Apart from the Average White Band and Cymande there aren't really many British funk bands worth listening to, I'm afraid. These two present a pair of novelty howlers, which demonstrate a distinct lack of understanding of how the word 'funky' is intended to operate musically:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKnoffPV8m0

1. Jasper Carrott - Funky Moped

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCPrsTfKJBk

2. The Goodies - Funky Gibbon

(not) the end - sun 10th may 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 10.05.09 // (Not) The End

So, when I wrote this I was convinced the run was almost over... turns out there are a few more shows yet!

---------------------

Hey folks,

This week's show is the last of the current run.

As a grand finale to the 08/09 season I'll be playing a mixed bag of cracking tunes that, for various reasons, didn't make it onto the 25 shows that have already taken place (see http://www.subcity.org/listenagain/journeys).

Artists featured will likely include Eddie Bo, Kalyanji & Anandji, Talking Heads, Muddy Waters, Adam & The Ants, Leslie West, Sex Pistols, The Beta Band, Kenny Lynch and as many more as I can possibly cram in.

No Spotlight this week; instead I will be playing some tracks from the (very) few albums, to be released in the last year or so, that I have actually bothered to listen to!

The Weird But Wonderful Vote is between a couple of tracks that are loosely related, and which both lost out in previous WBW votes this year:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPVI73Ocxg8

1. Babe Ruth - The Mexican

From the 'Oye Como Va' show (14/12/08), this is a great 'Fistful of Dollars' style rock track, the break from which Grandmaster Flash would often spin at his early block-parties. By a band from Hatfield in England.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4o8TeqKhgY

2. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message

Do I really need to say anything about this track? It lost out to 'White Lines' in the 'Flash Got More Bounce' show (15/02/09). As you may remember, Flash actually had next to nothing to do with this song; but the record company were keen to use his name and his reputation to keep 'em selling.

super hits of the 1980s - sun 3rd may - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 03.05.09 // Superhits of the 1980s

Hey folks,

This week's show is a 2-hour trip down my Memory Lane. I'll be playing a selection of genuine chart-busting mega hits, along with some less well known personal favourites, from the decade that just won't die (it's everywhere just now; from fashion, to music, to graphic design - if only it would make a comeback in fitba'*).

Expect to hear from the likes of Queen, Kraftwerk, Odyssey, The Pixies, Grace Jones, The Sugarcubes, Mel & Kim and as many more as I can squeeze in!

The Spotlight this week is on Prince/Symbol/The Artist. He may be a bit on the bonkers side of normal, but he strode like a miniature behemoth over the music scene of the 1980s and is one of the main reasons I love funk so. I'll be playing some of his best.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between the top-selling songs of 1980 and 1989 (according to http://www.everyhit.com/chart4.html):

http://www.clevver.com/music/video/14718/the-police-dont-stand-so-close-to-me.html

1. The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me

Sting relives the angst of his teaching days. Perv. (Actually the song isn't autobiographical, my lawyers tell me, and was, in fact, inspired by Nabakov's novel 'Lolita'. Perv.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2sjAnu_5ek

2. Black Box - Ride On Time

Featuring a quality vocal from the uncredited Loleatta Holloway (who sings about her man being 'right on time'), this is probably the most famous example of 'Italo-House' ever.

dub from the roots - sun 19th april - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 19.04.09 // Dub From The Roots

Hey folks,

By my reckoning there can be but a handful of Journeys left to be taken in season '08-'09 of Subcity broadcasts.

So If I'm going to squeeze another reggae show in, I might as well do it this week, eh!?

I'll be concentrating more on the dub side for this show, so expect to hear the likes of Coxsone Dodds, The Silvertones, Gregory Isaacs, Niney The Observer, Sly (Dunbar) & The Revolutionaries, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Sound Dimension and more. I'll also be breaking things up with some proper vocal reggae as well.

The Spotlight this week is on someone who was criminally omitted from my last reggae show: King Tubby. Born Osbourne Ruddock in 1941, Tubby was a genius electronics and sound engineer, who produced some of the earliest instrumental reggae B-sides and took part in and inspired the whole 'remix' explosion which would go on to become the foundation of the style known as 'dub'. He went on to produce some of the best '70s dub recordings, setting up his own studio in '71 and working with most of the big names of Jamaican music. His is still one of the most famous names on the island. He was shot dead in what is believed to have been an attempted robbery, in 1989. I'll be playing a few favourite tracks by him.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of instrumental Clash B-sides of singles released from 'Sandinista!', which reveal themselves to be basically speeded up dub:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9ZYRME7Wzs

1. The Clash - The Cool Out (B-side to The Call Up)

brasil - sunday 12th april 2009 - 12-2pm

Journeys // 12.04.09 // Brasil

Hey folks,

This week's show is a cornucopia of Brazilian delights. I'll be playing songs from several eras; from Bossa Nova to Musica Popular Brasileira to Tropicalia to 'Black Rio'. Artists likely to feature include Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, Os Mutantes, Banda Uniao Black and more.

The Weird But Wonderful vote this week features two gender-specifically altered versions of the song that broke Bossa Nova to the rest of the world:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1vmqFACFvA&feature=related

1. Julie London - The Boy From Ipanema

blank generation - sun 5th april 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 05.04.09 // Blank Generation

Hey folks,

Journeys returns, after a week off, with a collection of 70s Punk & New Wave.

The music of violent anti-establishment protest. And spitting 'n' that.

Artists likely to feature include Stiff Little Fingers, Sham 69, New York Dolls, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Wire, Rezillos, Cramps, Damned, Adam & The Ants and more.

The Spotlight will be on The Clash this week, with a few of their best 70s tracks (in my opinion) getting spun.

The Weird But Wonderful vote features "Punk's Saviours" aka Green Day. The two featured tracks are definitely Wonderful, being from back when they still young and snotty; but did you know they intend to turn 'American Idiot' into a 'punk-musical-rock-opera-type-thing'?! Wha... ? Still, 'Dookie' remains a classic:

artistry in rhythm - sun 22nd march 2009 12-2 pm

Journeys // 22.03.09 // Artistry In Rhythm

Hey folks,

Back to reality, and the old internet only for Journeys. So sad, so sad. :)

This week's show is a tiny little toe-dip into the multi-layered and often unintelligible world of jazz. I'll be playing some jazz greats that you can tap a foot to, rather than anything too challenging (I don't listen to that kind of stuff myself, so why 'inflict' it on you guys, eh?!).

Artists likely to feature include Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt, Antonio Carlos Joabim, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Herbie Hancock, Masters At Work and a few more I haven't even thought of yet.

This week's Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of jazz covers of Nirvana songs. Yes, jazz covers of Nirvana songs. Jazz artists have always played versions of the popular tunes of their day, and these dudes had no problems leaping aboard the grunge bandwagon for a while - purely in an effort to broaden the appeal of jazz to the 'yoof', you understand:

sweet soul music - sun 15th mar 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 15.03.09 // Sweet Soul Music

Hey folks,

This week's show is the last FM broadcast, on 106.6 FM in Glasgow, for Journeys for this run.

The show is also probably the last 2-hour Journeys for a while as well.

I'll be playing a selection of music from 60s soul and r'n'b legends such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Sam & Dave, Sam Cooke, Gladys Knight, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Al Green and The Temptations, as well as some lesser known belters.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is at least making some attempt to be relevant this week; by featuring two groups who owe a lot to soul and r'n'b, but who ended up making Hip-Hop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkWKwRuDRes

1. Public Enemy - Who Stole The Soul

One of the best, Public Enemy have been on the go for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. This is a great, but fairly obscure, track from their 1990 album, 'Fear Of A Black Planet' - a classic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QalWgriTPOo

2. The Pharcyde - Soul Flower

From the other side of the US comes this Fatback Band-sampling gem; another example of what Hip-Hop should sound like.

To decide which one plays the show out, get in touch during the live broadcast: studio@subcity.org or text 'subcity' then your message to 07766 40 41 42.

journeys sampler - sun 8th march 12-2 pm

Journeys // 08.03.09 // Journeys Sampler

Hey folks,

Due to ill-health, I have spent precisely zero time putting the show together so far this week.

However, with necessity being the mother of invention and all that, I have decided that round about about now would be a good time for a round-up of the shows so far.

So this Sunday sees a 'Journeys Sampler' of tunes that I loved from the past 18 shows so far, and some that didn't quite make it to air the first time around.

Expect everything from Funk to Reggae to House to the Blues, and a bit of everything else so far covered.

Expect Femi Kuti remixed by Kerry Chandler, King Tubby, Rotary Connection, Asha Bhosle, Herb Alpert, Simple Minds, Howlin' Wolf and many more.

The Weird But Wonderful choices are an attempt to redress the vote from way back in the 5th show; where I pitted a couple of my least favourite Roy Ayers tracks against each other. This week it's two cracking Roy Ayers written and produced RAMP songs which feature:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Mk4OyoPEIc

1. RAMP - Daylight

Written with long-time Ayers associates Edwin Birdsong and William Allen, this was sampled for A Tribe Called Quest's 'Bonita Applebum'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7wjBwjsVDo

2. RAMP - Everybody Loves The Sunshine

Now a Roy Ayers classic, this was recorded by him just a few month's before being laid-down by RAMP - with Ayers at the controls. Also sampled for a hip-hop tune, this tme by PM Dawn for 'So On & So On'.

To decide which one plays the show out, get in touch during the live broadcast: studio@subcity.org or text 'subcity' then your message to 07766 40 41 42.

wha's like us? - sun 1st march 2009 - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 01.03.09 // Wha's Like Us?

Here's tae us, Wha's like us? Damn few, And they're a' deid, Mairs the pity! (Trad. Scots drinking toast)

Hey folks,

This week's show is a little different from the norm, as it is not inspired by whatever I happen to have mostly been listening to for the past week; but rather by a listener suggestion.

Maureen Robertson got in touch with me and said 'why not do a Scottish show?', and, since Journeys is based in Scotland, I'm a Scotsman and there are loads of great Scottish artists out there, I figured why not indeed?

In fact I'm a bit shocked that the idea never even occurred to me!

I'll be playing the best of Scottish pop, rock and indie as well as whatever else comes to mind. Artists likely to feature include Primal Scream, Lulu, The Beta Band, Donovan, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The KLF and The Jesus & Mary Chain amongst many more.

The Spotlight this week is on the funkiest band ever to come out of Scotland; The Average White Band. Formed in Dundee in the early 70s, AWB produced a series of classic JB's influenced tracks and enjoyed international success including a number one single and album in the home of funk itself. I'm not going to be doing anything too clever; just playing a few of their best tunes.

The Weird But Wonderful vote this week is between two best selling Scottish pop acts, with a vague footballing connection:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7zRZBs1CHw

1. Deacon Blue - Dignity

It's about a boat called Dignity that is in fact a cunningly disguised metaphor for dignity. Drummer Dougie Vipond has since gone on to become a regularly seen face on Scottish televisions, often fronting football and other sports related shows, and is without doubt one of the worst television presenters in the world. Female vocalist Lorraine MacIntosh is now one of Scotland's worst actresses. Frontman Ricky Ross has written songs for and with James Blunt, Ronan Keating, KT Tunstall, David Sneddon, Gareth Gates and Emma Bunton amongst others. Quite a legacy for one band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U28qdnx3fiY

2. Wet Wet Wet - Wishing I Was Lucky

'The greatest white soul act ever' some 'people' said. Possibly hysterical Scottish tabloid journalists. I have to admit I was genuinely excited as a nipper, when I first heard this song was by a Scottish band. Then I found out more about them (and chirpy-cheeky-chappy lead singer Marti Pellow) and heard their subsequent efforts. This lack of interest on my part and Marti's well-publicised drug troubles hasn't prevented them from having monster hits around the globe and still being together and tourng to this day. They were the shirt sponsors for one-time Scottish Football League side Clydebank FC for a bit. See, told you they had a vague footy connection.

selecta selects - sun feb 22nd 2009 12-2 pm

Journeys // 22.02.09 // Selecta Selects

Hey there folks,

This week's show is the first FM Journeys of the year, available on 106.6 FM in Glasgow.

The show continues to be available world-wide at www.subcity.org.

It's a Jamaican Journeys this week, with a full 2 hours of the finest reggae, ska, dub, rocksteady and whatever else I manage to fit in. Artists likely to feature include Bob Marley, Augustus Pablo, Big Youth, Dillinger, Count Lasher, Otis Gayle and Ernest Ranglin amongst many others.

The Spotlight is back during the FM run and will be on Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

Perry is often portrayed as the mad genius of dub, and that's pretty much what he is, as far as I can tell from everything I have ever read, heard or seen about him!

Getting his start with Coxsone Dodd (of Studio One fame) in the 1950s, Perry's ability was always evident. Unfortunately so was his fractious temperament and he left after yet another argument over money. He went on to record at Joe Gibbs', before setting up his own label, 'Upsetter Records'.

He went on to build his own studio, Black Ark, in the 70s and more or less single-handedly created the international appetite for dub reggae, with his backing band The Upsetters (made up of many musicians who went to become legends in their own right, including brothers Aston 'Family Man' Barrett (bass) and Carlton Barrett (drums), of The Wailers).

By the late 70s he was in a bad way, due to the stresses and strains of the music business and a healthy appetite for drugs. The Black Ark ended up lying derelict before burning down.

He is still around though and has enjoyed a massive renaissance in interest in him and his music (especially that made with The Upsetters and his early recordings of Bob Marley & The Wailers).

I'll be playing a few of my favourite Lee Perry & The Upsetters tunes from his 70s heyday.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of American, generally non-reggae artists; both with highly successful international reggae hits to their name:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEtC4iTVVBw 1. Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5CdCdmj1go 2. Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy

flash got more bounce - sun 15th feb - 12-2 pm

Journeys // 15.02.09 // Flash Got More Bounce

Hey folks,

The show this week is a Grandmaster Flash special, in honour not only of his very welcome return to these shores, but also the new album he has coming out in March; 'The Bridge'.

Flash plays the Classic Grand in Glasgow on Easter Sunday (12th April), and, having seen him the last couple of times he's played there, I can highly recommend going along if you can!!

I'll be playing all sorts of early hip-hop and electro, a couple of mixes from 'The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash' that came on Strut a few years back, and a whole load of tracks that I've heard him use in his block-rockin turntable mixes. Artists likely to feature include, Blondie, The World's Famous Supreme Team, Cymande, Liquid Liquid, Curtis Mayfield and DJ Kool Herc.

The Weird But Wonderful is strictly Wonderful this week, as a couple of classics fight it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny-zSZ62Ig4

1. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five ft Melle Mel & Duke Bootee - The Message

According to Wikipedia, the song was written by Sugar Hill session musician Ed "Duke Bootee" Fletcher and Furious Five MC Melle Mel. Flash and the other members of The Furious Five, although credited on the record, were uninterested in recording the song and are not found on the finished record ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Message_(song) ). Flash definitely supplied the cracking B-side 'The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel', as well as his street credentials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWOiljLW4Z8

2. Grandmaster & Melle Mel - White Lines (Don't Do It)

Another track that actually has very little to do with Flash (he had left the record label some time before, but Melle Mel added Grandmaster to his own name in an effort to retain some of that Flash aura). Apparently also written and produced by Melle Mel, it's a crackin tune.

that hammond sound - sun 8th feb - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 08.02.09 // That Hammond Sound

Hey folks,

This week's show is a celebration of one of the funkiest and yet most often derided of instruments; the Hammomd organ.

Invented in the 1930s by Laurens Hammond as an electric alternative to the traditional (and expensive to maintain) wind-driven church pipe-organ, it soon found a place in the hearts of musicians of every persuasion. Starting off in Gospel, Blues and Jazz, by the 1960s and 70s it was almost ubiquitous amongst Rock, Funk and Soul acts too.

Despite ceasing production in 1974, the original electro-mechanical Hammond organs (mostly the B-3 & C-3 models) are still in use in their thousands today.

The Hammond has appeared on thousands of tracks by hundreds of artists of all kinds. Yet it still retains an abiding association with that most foul of creations; Muzak (an ill-deserved reputation that it shares with the vibraphone).

Whilst I was putting the tracks together for the show, I listened to just about every tune I have that involves heavy use of one variety or other of the mighty Hammond and Gillian (my wife) asked if I was really going to do a show of 'lift music'! Charming! But actually not unreasonable, given that I was listening to a cheesy Hammond cover of some 1960s pop standard or other.

My intention in this show is to (mostly) avoid the kind of tracks that you'd expect to hear accompanied by a robotic voice saying, 'Going Up. Lift stopping. Fourth floor.', or similar, and to instead play a crackin' selection of funky, rocky and soulful Hammond grooves.

Artists likely to feature include The Beatles, James Brown, The Spencer Davis Group, Jimmy McGriff, Billy Preston, The Small Faces and Charles Kynard, as well as a host of others.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of fairly 'recent' exponents of the Hammond-heavy sound:

1. The Charlatans - The Only One I Know - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZI1BQzY-nU

Not only did I soooo dig this when it first came out, I even tried to grow the exagerrated mop-top sported by Tim Burgess. Class.

2. The Inspiral Carpets - Joe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7lRFUCjVz4

Remember when everyone wanted a pair of British Knights trainers? Then you must be almost as old as me. :) (I believe that this song actually features a Farfisa organ rather than a Hammond, but I did say 'Hammond sound'!)

brimful of asha - sun 2nd feb 2009 - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 01.02.09 // Brimful Of Asha

Hey folks,

This week's show is dedicated to everyone's favourite playback singer, the Queen of Bollywood; Asha Bhosle.

According to Wikipedia, Ashaji has been the singing voice behind hundreds of film performances and thousands of songs; from filmi music to Classical Indian, pop, ghazals and qawwalis - in over 14 languages including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and, her own native tongue, Marathi.

I'll be playing a selection of my favourite bits of her Bollywood repertoire, so expect heavy funk, sitar rock, Indian pop and a really groovy hour.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of British-Indian crackers:

1. Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7ab9wUcxoFQ

I'm pretty sure it's not exactly cool to like this song, but I f*ckin' love it! :)

2. Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook Remix)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujgmo0NM5dY

Pretty obvious, eh?

cover charge - sun 25th jan 2009 - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 25.01.09 // Cover Charge

Hey folks,

This week's Journeys is a bit of a strange one...

As a young fellow I abhorred the cover version. Mainly because those that I was most aware of tended to be by dreadful, middle of the road performers, who I despised for their very existence. Their modern equivalents are still plying the same vile trade - so many decent (and not so decent) songs murdered by the likes of Take That, Atomic Kitten, Girls Aloud, Westlife and Geri Halliwell. Don't even get me started on the whole Radio One 'Live Lounge' thing. Awful (I mean who wants to hear Keane singing 'Dirrtylicious' - a hellish clash of Christine Aguilera and Destiny's Child and f****ing Keane!?!?!?*). It's enough to make your blood boil.

On the other hand, there were a whole stack of great tunes that I only ever got to hear of because of the awful cover version that hit the charts...

And there are some really good, less obvious covers out there...

So, to cut to the chase, I have decided to confront my prejudices head on, and am devoting the whole show to the art of the good cover version.

Artists likely to feature include Isaac Hayes, Jackie Wilson, Canned Heat, The Byrds, Happy Mondays and Talking Heads - covering the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Robert Johnson, The Temptations and more.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of the most well known & often covered songs ever;

1. Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MPD-4HZtahM

From Whitney in the Bodyguard to every Karaoke machine in the Known World, this must still be the most sung song since 'Happy Birthday'.

2. Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WJTiXoMCppw

Lucky enough to be chosen as the 'X Factor' single this year, this song has also been covered innumerable times. Jeff Buckley did a great version. Alexandra (X Factor 'winner') not so much...

the big easy - sun jan 18th 2009 - 2-3pm

Journeys // 18.01.09 // The Big Easy

Hey folks,

Journey's is back, back, back. Again.

I'll be back on the air this Sunday with a soulful gumbo of New Orleans legends.

Artists likely to feature include Fats Domino, The Meters, Lee Dorsey, Professor Long Hair, Eddie Bo, Earl Palmer, Louis Armstrong and more.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of very mainstream New Orleanians:

1. Harry Connick Jr - She http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UOumzTnDxq4

From his 'New Orleans funk' album. So, not swing and featuring some great New Orleans session players, such as Zigaboo Modeliste (Drums) and George Porter Jr (Bass Guitar) both founder members of The Meters - but still not that great...

2. Randy Newman - You Can Leave Your Hat On http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G-A5kD1rZII

Actually Born in the City of Angels, Newman moved to New Orleans as a child and spent his formative years living and then regularly visiting the Crescent City. Responsible for the soundtracks to such artistic visions as Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Cars; Newman also wrote this song - made famous by Tom Jones and The Full Monty. Journeys // 14.12.08 // Oye Como Va

Hey there folks,

This week's show is the last for a while.

Subcity is taking a break until 11th January 2009 (I'm finishing up a week early due to a family 'do').

So you best tune in this Sunday 2-3 PM for a long-lasting fix of unseasonal Latin American crackers. They'll warm yer cockles - even if you live in the same cold Northern climes as me.

I'll be playing sounds from Brazil, Mexico, Cuba and maybe more. Artists will include Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Jose Felicianos, Santana and more.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of songs by European acts that have Latin American titles (bit weak, I know, but it's kind of a link):

1. Babe Ruth - The Mexican http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9kb4CP9lhhk

A great 1976, spaghetti-western style rock tune from a band from Hatfield, Herts, England. What could be better or more appropriate?

2. The Gibson Brothers - Cuba http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8DmK7zuN7z0

A slab of 1978 French (via Martinique) disco-funk. Nice.

meet on the ledge - sun 7th dec 2008 - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 07.12.08 // Meet On The Ledge

Hey folks,

This week's Journey is a return to one of my favourite places - the 1960s.

After last week's 21st century show, I am relapsing in spectacular fashion, with a selection of psychedelia and other freaky beats. I'll be playing the likes of Buffalo Springfield, The Attack, The Zombies, Fairport Convention and Thor's Hammer, amongst others.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a song that was apparently written in all seriousness and one that had it's tongue firmly in it's cheek from conception:

1. Traffic - Hole In My Shoe http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aaguQLgjbMo

Featuring a young Stevie Winwood, this song is forever tied to Neil from the Young Ones as far as I am concerned. Oh, and they followed this one up with 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush' - I mean, come on!

2. Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - I'm The Urban Spaceman http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hj86_2tAtdU

Written and sung by Neill Innes (along with the rest of the band obv.), I first heard this one performed as part of the 'Mony Python Live At The Hollywood Bowl' film when I was too young to have any clue what it was supposed to be about. I'm still not that sure now...

modern dance - sun 30th nov 2008 - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 30.11.08 // Modern Dance

Hey there folks,

This week's show is about as up-to-date as I am ever likely to get; featuring, as it does, my own personal favourites from the dance and electronica worlds - from 2000 to date.

Expect to hear from The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, LCD Soundsystem, Mr Scruff, Luke Vibert and Daft Punk, amongst others.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is a battle between a couple of Glasgow-based, unsigned 'bedroom' producers:

1. Harry Goggolini - Fined http://www.myspace.com/travelsofharrygoggolini (Click on song title)

Two 303s, a drum machine and a whole load of electronic action recorded live from the spare room. Nice.

2. DJ Freakout - Electric Penetration For The Mind & Soul http://www.myspace.com/djfreakout (Click on song title)

Another home-produced gem, with some nice sampling and synths.

sixties soul sisters - 23rd nov 2008 - 2-3pm

Journeys // 23.11.08 // Sixties Soul Sisters

Hey folks,

No prizes for guessing that this week's show features a selection of fine, female-voiced soul. I'll be playing a selection of up-tempo groovers and a few love-gone-wrong type slower numbers, all from the 60s. Expect: Aretha Franklin, Dinah Washington, Erma Franklin, Irma Thomas, Laura Lee and more.

This week's Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of songs by blokes, but which are dedicated to women-kind in general:

1. James Brown - It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RZMgLQuTluA

James loves the ladies. In a pre-PC kind of way.

(Swiftly followed in the same video by 'I Got You (I Feel Good)' - Nice!)

2. Daddy Kae & Yvonne - Eleven Commandments of Woman http://cowbell.fm/track/37551-daddy-kae-yvonne-eleven-commandments-of-woman

Yvonne teaches Daddy the rules, in a funky stylee.

funky president! sun 16th nov 2008 - 2-3 pm

Journeys // 16.11.08 // Funky President!

Hey folks,

So, there I was trying to decide what to do this week's show on, and then that Obama bloke went and got himself elected...

This week's show is a collection of songs about political and social empowerment; from artists such as James Brown, Isley Brothers, John Lennon, Public Enemy, Lee Dorsey and others.

Ultimately Barack Obama's presidency may not turn out to be all that different from any other American regime, but surely we're allowed to hope, 'pray' and day-dream until it all goes wrong!?!?

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of versions of a Temptations' classic:

1. The Heptones - Message From A Black Man

A Coxsone Dodds produced reggae version: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=e8xN5YXHUoU

2. The Whatnauts - Message From A Black Man

Sweet funky soul version: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=u7tLrNLL-PQ

(Original Temptations version: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XDeasoVNgoI)

the feeling they call the blues - sunday 2-3 pm

Journeys // 02.11.08 // The Blues

Hey folks,

Journeys goes back to it's normal length of 1 hour from this week, so tune in at 2 PM for an hour of Blues greats. Artists likely to feature include Muddy Waters, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, T-Bone Walker, Leadbelly and more.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of songs with 'Blues' in the title, but which aint actually Blues tunes:

1. Masters At Work - MAW Latin Blues http://www.last.fm/music/Nuyorican+Soul/_/MAW+Latin+Blues

From the Nuyorican Soul album. It's cool, but it's far too cheery to be the Blues! It's not on youtube, but you can hear it at the above last.fm link (just click 'play' on the wee player at the right of screen).

2. Kasabian - Butcher Blues http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1gPDWWp-Mg

From their debut album (when they were good). At least this one attempts to be kind of depressing. :)

instru-mental - sun 26th oct 2008 - 1-3 pm

Journeys // 26.10.08 // Instru-Mental

Hey folks,

This week's show consists of a choice selection of (mostly) soul and funk instrumentals (although I've allowed the odd chant, exclamation, or repeated vocal line). Artists likely to feature include Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Link Wray, The Kay Gees, Ike Turner & His Kings of Rhythm, The Joe Cuba Sextet, Kool & The Gang, Charles Kynard, Duane Eddy and more.

The Spotlight is on one of the greatest funk bands ever. It's New Orleans' own The Meters. Formed in 1965 by Art Neville, The Meters had some of the best players around (including guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste) and became the 'house band' for Allen Toussaint and his record label, Sansu Enterprises. I'll be spinning a few of their own releases.

The Weird But Wonderful vote features one of my favourite artists in a couple of his cheesier moments:

1. Roy Ayers - He Aint Heavy, He's My Brother

A vibes-heavy cover of the Hollies' classic.

2. Roy Ayers - I Don't Know How To Love Him

Another cover, this time of the Andrew Lloyd Webber 'classic', from Jesus Christ Superstar... hmm...

No links for the WBW this week, but both tunes are pretty well known as the originals and as a multitude of cover versions, all of which can be found on youtube if you have steadfastly avoided music up to this point.

can u dance? - sun 19th oct 2008 - 1-3 pm

Journeys // 19.10.08 // Can U Dance?

Hey folks,

After a week off for Jay (Northern Music Collective) Miles's wedding, Journeys returns on an Old-School House tip.

Expect to hear Adonis, Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Humanoid, Inner City, Frankie Knuckles, Raze and more.

The Spotlight falls on Marshall Jefferson this week. As well as being responsible for one of the greatest House tunes ever made (Move Your Body a.k.a The House Music National Anthem), he also helped to put Acid House on the map through his collaborations with DJ Pierre amongst others. I'll be playing the afore mentioned classic and a couple of tunes that Jefferson added his magic to as producer.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of 80s Commercial House classics:

1. Coldcut - Doctorin' The House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAoCkVkcMr8

2. Krush - House Arrest (The Beat Is The Law) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61rFY4VPADE

shark out deh - sun 5th oct 2008 - 1-3 pm

Journeys // 05.10.08 // Shark Out Deh

Hey folks,

This week's show is a skanking, 'one drop'-ping, Reggae extravaganza.

I'll be playing some Ska, some old-school Dancehall, a bit of Dub and probably several other sub-genres of Reggae I've never even heard of. Expect to hear Bob Marley, Dillinger, U Roy, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Burning Spear, Prince Buster, Errol Holt and many more.

The Spotlight falls on one of Reggae's lesser known, but still prodigiously prolific, producer/performers: Roy Richards. He started performing and recording back in the 60s and passed away just last year. I'll be playing a few of his best tracks. Simple.

The Weird But Wonderful vote is between a couple of the songs that first exposed my lily-white ears to the riddim:

1. Eric Clapton - I Shot The Sherriff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UddURb0alQc

Released in 1974, Bob Marley apparently told Eric that he quite liked Clapton's cover version of the track from the Wailer's Burnin' album of '73.

2. The Specials - A Message To You Rudy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGDQ85Dg-ss

From 1979, this is a cover of Dandy Livingston's original; Rudy, A Message To You from 1967.

out of africa - sunday 28th sep 2008 - 1-3 pm

Journeys // 28.09.08 // Out Of Africa

Hey folks,

Journeys returns on Sunday with another visit to Africa. I'll be playing a few old favourites from last year's African shows and a few 'new' ones too. Expect to hear Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, The Mercury Dance Band, Orchestra Baobab, William Onyeabor and more!

The Spotlight is on Ethiopia this week. I was tempted to do a full show on Ethiopian music, but I figured that as a slightly acquired taste, it might not be enjoyed as much by the listeners as it was by the host - I also did a full hour show last year! Instead I'm going to play just a few of my favourite tracks by artists such as Alemayehu Eshete, Ayalew Mesfin and Mahmoud Ahmed.

This week's Weird But Wonderful vote is a clash of cultures as two versions of the same song fight it out:

1. Martin Solveig vs Salif Keita - Madan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3UaoJSowvY

The French House maestro delivers a stonking Westernised dance-floor remix of Salif Keita's original.

2. Salif Keita - Madan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vmLW8Tqg14

The original... and the best?

funk, funk - sunday 21st sep 2008 - 1-3 pm

Journeys // 21.09.08 // Funk, Funk

Hey folks,

Journeys is back, back, back!

Only I got so wrapped up in putting the show together that I have completely forgotten to let you all know it is happening.

The first show of Season 2 of Journeys is; 'Funk, Funk'.

It's a wee meander along the groovy pathways of 1970s American funk.

Artists likely to make an appearance include: Cameo (yes, Cameo!), Parliament, Funkadelic, CJ & Co., Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign, Ohio Players, Maxayne, Dennis Cofffey and more.

Weird But Wonderful

I've never been one to avoid crowbarring Reggae into a show, so the Weird But Wonderful contenders for this week are:

1. Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sz1hXawwx

'Reggae-funk' carried off by Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert's earthy, soulful vocals.

2. Shark Wilson & The Basement Heaters - Make It Reggae

http://www.last.fm/music/Shark%2BWilson%2B%2526%2BThe%2BBasement%2BHeaters/_/Make+It+Reggae

A reggae version of the James Brown classic (Make It Funky). It is reggae and it is funky. (Click to link to audio)

To vote, get in touch during the show: studio@subcity.org or text 'subcity' then your message to 07766 40 41 42. The winner plays the show out.

Spotlight On...

As the show has been extended to 2 hours, I'm including an extra wee feature this year, which will look at a particular artist (or label, or song, or whatever I feel like) that I consider particularly important to the theme of that week's show. This week, as it's funk, I'm going to look at the best funk backing-band in the world... ever! It's the J.B.'s! Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Jabo Starks, William 'Bootsy' Collins and Bobby Byrd are amongst the many members of this stellar line up, which backed James Brown and had a number of releases of their own. I'll be playing a few J.B.'s headline tracks (although the Godfather can definitely be heard on at least a couple of them), which showcase their musical dexterity and just downright 'funky-ness'!

For all this goodness just tune in to http://www.subcity.org, 1-3 PM Sunday 21st September 2008!
