On The Iron Highway
Journeys // 1300-1400 20.03.10
on the iron highway - sat 20th march 1-2 pm
Hey folks,
This week's show is a genre-busting selection of train tunes. From songs about literal choo choos, to metaphorical stories of lost love, tales of adventure and misadventure, or just another dance craze; the train is a common theme in popular music.
I'll be playing a variety of examples from the worlds of funk, soul, pop, rock, reggae, electronica and whatever else I can fit in. Artists may well include the likes of Kraftwerk, The J.B.s, The Resident Filters, Dennis Brown, Chuck Berry and The Clash.
The Weird But Wonderful is a choice between a couple of ladies who forgot to turn up at the station:

1. Aretha Franklin - Walk On By
Classic. I don't really need to tell you anything about this one, do I? Dionne Warwick's original of this Bacharach & David belter is probably better known, but I love this version by the woman they call, 'The Queen Of Soul'.

2. Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walking
Another classic tune. Written and produced by pop maverick Lee Hazlewood, this track could be considered an accidental 'answer record' to Walk On By. Nancy sure won't be shedding no tears, no how.
