free to experiment - part 1
Does Not Affect Play // 20.10.09 // Free To Experiment - Part 1
This week Does Not Affect Play begins a three (or should that be free?) part journey into the realms of freely distributed music. Over the course of the next three episodes I'll be highlighting numerous sources of amazing free music, discussing the reasons behind free distribution, and playing a whole host of songs you can download legally for free. The playlist for each episode will contain links to download all the songs from their original source.
Part 1 will highlight a number of free music sources that boast tens of thousands of interesting tracks, such as the superb Free Music Archive. Part 2 will focus on record labels that choose to distribute their music for free; and part 3 will be discussing the DIY approach with artists that distribute music freely themselves. If you have any interesting music or opinions you'd like to contribute to the coming shows then email jannik@subcity.org with your info.
So that's the scoop - tune in to part 1 for Swedish swing-jazz-death-metal, novelty beatboxing, Gamelan music and a "circus punk marching band".

little boxes they put us in
Does Not Affect Play // 06.10.09 // Little Boxes They Put Us In
After a recent awkward attempt on my part to explain what kind of music the show plays I decided to piece together a mix of the different things that can typically be found on Does Not Affect Play. Listen in for brand new music, old recovered music, and a significant bout of genre-hopping.

a few minutes before the dawn
Does Not Affect Play // 15.09.09 // A Few Minutes Before The Dawn
Does Not Affect Play will be returning to the airwaves (both online and on 106.6FM) in a brand new timeslot (Tuesdays 4-5pm) next week. Whilst everyone else has been preparing for a full on audio assault, I've been tinkering away in the small hours, sewing together one of the most beautiful hours of music you will hear this year. Undoubtedly one of the best playlists assembled for this show so far, and also one of the most peaceful. Listen live, or listen again (in a bath with some candles), to tracks from Danny Norbury, Motohiro Nakashima, Message To Bears, Chihei Hatakeyama, Loren Dent and Haruko amongst others.

latin carnival
Does Not Affect Play // 26.05.09 // Latin Carnival
This Wednesday the Flying Duck will play host to a Hispanic Carnival featuring SambaYaBamba, Glasgow Capoeira, Kenodeke Collective and a host of DJs including myself. So I figured I'd best get everyone in the mood with an hour of nothing but latin music. If you want to find out more about the event check out www.myspace.com/hispaniccarnival

ass, titties and soul (and a competition!)
Ahead of the End of FM Party with DJ Assault I'll be spinning some funk, soul and rnb 45s to give you a flavour of what'll be going down in the funk and soul room. There's also a chance for you to win a copy of the brand new 7" from Milwaukee sensations Kings Go Forth. Their first single, One Day (MRC-001) sold out worldwide in less than 24 hours and has been tearing up dancefloors across the globe ever since. Their new single Now We're Gone (MRC-002) is another killer, and you can win a copy by listening to Does Not Affect Play from 10-11am on Friday. Details of the competition will be announced in the first half of the show. Check out http://www.myspace.com/kingsgoforth for a preview of the track in question.

swingin', surfin' and streakin'
Does Not Affect Play // 06.03.09 // Swingin', Surfin' and Streakin'
This week on Does Not Affect Play we celebrate the stupefyingly silly and the supremely sleazy. Expect songs about streaking and surfing alongside a mouthwatering selection of jug jugglers from the 45s that sense and civility forgot. Essential listening for all lovers of trashy novelty numbers and raucous rockers. Probably the only time this year you'll hear songs about a blonde haired midget on a Shetland pony and limboing in the same hour.

gospel and garage
Does Not Affect Play // 27.02.09 // Gospel and Garage
This week I'll be turning my attention to two genres I don't play as much as I should - gospel and garage. Both genres really deserve their own special edition of the show, but as I'm pushed for time I've had to wedge them together. Will it work? Tune in on Friday to find out.

walk on a rainbow trail
Does Not Affect Play // 20.02.09 // Walk On A Rainbow Trail
Vietnamese tribal singing, glitchy electronic ambience, space-rock, private press folk records and custom-made baroque lutes combine to make an hour of static crackle, muffled drums and hushed dreamy soundscapes.

chalk and cheese
Does Not Affect Play // 23.01.09 // Chalk and Cheese
In a break from normality there's no theme running through this week's show, however there is probably the best playlist of the series so far. Going from hard funk and uptempo rnb to ominous drone and lush ambience this episode is a real case of chalk and cheese.

soon to be forgotten
Does Not Affect Play // 30.10.08 // Soon To Be Forgotten
This week I'll be taking a look into the distant future and guessing what tracks of today will be the forgotten collectables of tomorrow. To this end I'll be playing a whole host of timeless records released in the last 5 years.

oddities for oddballs
Does Not Affect Play // 16.10.08 // Oddities For Oddballs
This week on Does Not Affect Play, I'll be bringing you an almighty collection of trashy novelty 45s. Prepare for a plethora of the finest avant-retard masterpieces from the 1960s. Truly essential listening, as there's a chance you won't hear some of these records again for another 40 years.
Check out the forum after the show, where I'll be posting some label scans for some of the harder to find records.

Does Not Affect Play // 02.10.08 // R'n'b Like It Used To Be
This week on Does Not Affect Play I'll be playing exclusively rhythm and blues. Expect to hear tales of rejection, lust, heartache and despair from 7-8pm this Thursday on www.subcity.org.

funky down easy
Does Not Affect Play // 25.09.08 // Funky Down Easy
This week on Does Not Affect Play I'll be turning my attention to the subject of funk. If you don't know what funk is here's a definition from Peter Wermelinger's superb Funky and Groovy Music Records Lexicon. "Funk is that bumpy and groovy sound that hits your belly, sends out waves through the whole body, making you move your feet, nod your head and feel alright." I'll be spinning an hour of these sounds from 7-8pm this Thursday so put your radio and your dancing shoes on and get ready to do your thing.
If you missed last week's episode, "Tittyshakers and Other Unmentionables", then you can still find it on listen again complete with a full playlist. If it left you gagging for more then don't fret as there'll be a healthy dose of bust bouncers in the "Oddities For Oddballs" edition of Does Not Affect Play coming in a few weeks time.
