BLACK STATIC TRANSMISSION

Music's a funny one.

I think I was more in love with the idea of music than what was being forced into my poor wee ear canals for a long, long time. The possibilities were endless (in theory at least), and the thought of attempting to channel something both totally primal and otherworldly into pure vibrating energy seemed like the most natural and surreal form of ecstatic expression I could come up with.

There were the albums that totally blew your mind as a kid - everyone had/has them. That sense of total joy at discovering exactly what you wanted to hear at that time, and never getting sick of lolling around in pure audio orgasms! But the more you heard, the more you realised there was less worth hearing, and the more that happened, the greater the gulf between a love of music and a love of the idea of music became.

Fucking punshing.

Thousands of pounds got wasted looking for a mainline connection to something purer than the dishwater ideas of the form and marketing horse being flogged past death into total disintegration. CD shelves buckled under empty weight, first in my house then in the second-hand records shops all over Glasgow.

There were always the jewels which popped up through the shite every now and again, obviously, but at a crippling cost. That student overdraft is still being paid off.

Then you find that one band, or that one album which just explodes everything open, re-igniting something totally wild, naive and ecstatic. A total re-discovery of childish giddiness and an uncorrupted love of what sound originally had the potential for, and where it must have originally come from. That shit will never be forgotten, and you won't find it on the shelves in Oxfam Music.

What a welcome head-fuck!

Then the real challenge begins, of attempting to keep that channel open.

If sonic inertia and weary predictability have spread Progeria into your auditory canals, you could do a lot worse than free, psychedelic liberation at 9pm on Tuesday 18th September 2007, courtesy of Subcity Radio.

Hope to have some of you listening.

Chris.
